2nd Trimester

Did you fast for your 1-hr Glucose test?

For some reason, my midwife said not to, only to eat a high-protein light breakfast. so I did. my numbers came back a little high and now I have to take the damn 3-hr test. Did all of you ladies fast for your 1-hr? do you think that's why I didn't pass??

  • Every dr and midwife are different.

Some of them have you fast and some don't. They read the #'s accordingly. It doesn't have anything to do with if you passed or not.

My drs office also doesn't have me fast.

  • No, your not supposed to.  I ate a normal non sugary breakfast.  I failed both 1 hour and 3 hour with DD#1

  • During my last pregnancy, I didn't fast -- in fact, I ate a chocolate Fiber One bar on my way to my appointment. I didn't know I was testing that day (I was going OOT, so my MW decided at the appt to give it early), so I didn't do anything to "prepare." I still passed.

We just moved, so I'm seeing a new OB. This time, I'm not to eat/drink anything after midnight the night before.

Every doc (and the standards the use to say whether you pass or fail) is different.

  • I guess it depends on the practice.  My instructions are to fast for 2 hours prior to drinking the Glucola.
  • I'm having mine at my next appointment and was told not to fast. I was told however that if I fail it I will have to fast for the 3 hour test.

  • I take mine on the 30th and dr told me I have to fast...Also made it the first appt in the morning so I wont be hungry....
  • I just did mine yesterday, and called to ask about this specifically. No fasting for me, I had an early appt but she said to have a small breakfast cause the glucola can be harsh on an empty stomach, she suggested no donuts or anything too sugary. I had a bowl of cereal (even put a little sugar on it, it was too bland) and somehow my results still came back low. I am pretty sure for the 3 hr they require you to fast though.

  • I was told no food within 3 hours of the test.  For a pregnant woman, that was torture.  I gulped that sugary drink down.
  • It depends on the test your doctor is performing.  There are two types of glucose tests for GD.  One (recommended by the American Diabetes Society because it is more accurate and there are less chances of having an induced diabetic reaction because of the additional sugars in your system) requires fasting. The other does not.
