Mixed Emotions at U/S--no embryo at 5w?

I had an ultrasound yesterday to rule out an ectopic. The good news is, nothing is developing in a tube. The startling part was, there was a yolk sak but no baby. She measured me at 5w 2d (I thought I was 6w 0d). There was a white area on the screen that she said would turn into the baby ?? THEN, lower in the sac she thought she saw another yolk sak. She asked us if we had a reason to have twins, but then said she didnt think it was a twin. She said it may be debris (really, in the sack?! isnt that a BAD thing?!) The she said she had no idea what the additional speck was.

Needless to say, we left totally confused. We're happy its not ectopic, but worried there was no embryo. Is it possible to see a yolk sak only at 5w 2d and no baby? She assured us yes, but I feel like Ive seen a zillion posts where at 5 weeks you can see an embryo. Any ideas on the (potentially) 2nd yolk sac?

Anyone experience anything similar?

Our 1st we only saw the yolk sac this early...

I'm surprised she didn't call in the doc on this other "spot". OMG twins I think I would pass out at the first mention of the word.

at about 5w I just saw an empty sac no yolk even. Doctor was a little worried because I thought I was farther along however I was just way off on my estimate. Now at ten weeks the baby was there with little arms wiggling around etc.

So just take a deep breath and try to calm your understandable fears - you should be ok.

I went in for a u/s at 5 weeks and a few days and all they saw was a gestational sac. I would try not to worry-- easier said than done. I went in at 8w5d and saw a healthy baby with a hb of 165/170. Did they schedule you for a follow up u/s?

Mine is set for Monday and I'll be 5w2d, too. I looked up 5 week ultrasound on youtube and mostly all you can see is the yolk sac and gest sac, I think you can see more of an embryo come 6+ weeks. I think if there was anything to worry about you'd know about it.

I had a US at 4 weeks 6 days because of some spotting. All I could see was the gestational sac. MD drew beta levels and said that the US and betas matched. I see my MD on 6/13 and I hope to see a yolk sac!

Same EXACT thing happened to me! The fetal pole doesn't start growing until right at 6 weeks. And measuring the sac isn't an accurate way to measure how far along you are. Your experience sounds exactly like what happened to me! 1.5 weeks later we found the fetal pole and heartbeat--it turns out I was a week behind what they originally thought. Don't worry

I went in for my u/s when I thought I was about 7ish weeks based on when i got my BFP (I have no idea when I ovulated because I have only had 3 random periods since my DS was born 10 months ago). They only found a kinda looking sac that was still empty and she said it looked like I was only about 4.5 weeks. The math didn't make sense to me since I had already gotton my BFP 2 weeks prior. The OB called be and rescheduled another u/s for 2 weeks later to check for growth and development. The appt is next Tuesday and the wait is killing me. I've also had brown and red spotting nearly every day, but I also had that with my son. I'm not experiencing pain, so she doesn't believe it to be in the fallopian tube or in the process of a miscarriage. She did say that we can't rule out the possibility of a blighted ovum being the reason for the BFP, which is just so devestating to me to even think about. I had betas done before the u/s because of the spotting and they were low, but rising. So all I can do now is nothing but wait and it's killing me,

GL with your pregnancy. How long do you have to wait before you go back for another u/s? Will they do bloodwork for you to double check that it's progressing?

I am surprised that they even saw a yolk sac that early. I am not certain that I have known anyone to see an embryo at the beginning of five weeks... my OB was even surprised to see one at the beginning of my sixth week.

Also, fraternal twins are not hereditary. So maybe it is a twin. At this point in the pregnancy I don't think there would be much they could do about a spot she saw on the screen..... everything is so small that they cant see much and its not like they are going to biopsy it and risk you losing your pregnancy to tell. Just tell the dr about it the next time you are in.

5weeks is way to early to see anything, I think. Don't worry. I have no info on the second yolk sac - sorry.

This is exactly why my OB won't do an US until 8-10 weeks after your missed period. Because if your too early it's a waste of time and they know that it just causes us worry if we don't see that flicker and hear the heartbeat.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. I really appreciate it. I just didnt really know what to expect at the u/s and now am even more confused. No baby. Maybe potential for two babies. This is stressful stuff!

I have an appt with the DR in 3 weeks and will ask about more bloodwork/future u/s. My doctor is a group practice, which could make things interesting and all u/s are done at the hospital's women center by techs. It's a nice place, but Im beginning to sense how you can lack a personal relationship with anyone during this process.

Lots of deep breaths for now! Thank you all again--I really appreciate it!!!

I had the same thing but the DR did say it was early. As for the 2nd yolk sac maybe twins...I couldnt say but congrats and dont stress too much...
