How much is your LO drinking at daycare?

Last week was LO's first week at daycare.  I'm pumping and she's been taking all her bottles and is hungry for more.  We've increased the amount in the bottles twice, and now we're up to 4 6-oz bottles.  I'm pumping just enough, 24 ounces a day, I hope I can keep up!  I have a freezer stash but it's not huge.  Is there anything you do to help get more milk?  I look at a photo of LO and I massage my boobs.  I'm pumping every 3 hours on average, so that's 3 times during the day.

  • Have you tried taking vitamin supplements?  Fenugreek (3 capsules, 3 times/day) and Blessed Thistle were recommended by my Lactaction Consultant. Also, drink a LOT more water...you might be drinking a lot now, drink even more.

  • DD gets 16 oz while at daycare...usually 4 oz every 2-3 hours.

I would try the fenugreek, and increase water AND calories.  Also, make sure you are getting enough rest!  I pump so much less milk when I am not rested.  If you are really wanting to bump up your supply you can make some lactation cookies....you can probably find the recipe on the breastfeeding board.  I made them last week and they were delicious!!!

  • The first day of day care for my LO was last week. She drank 8 oz THREE TIMES! I have never been able to pump more than 6 at a time, and usually I only get 4-5 oz. So here's me, a nervous, emotional wreck, pumping away at work to try to get more (I pump 3 times a day at work for each time she eats and once in the morning after her first feeding). The second day of day care she drank 9 oz 3 times! Needless to say, there's no way I can provide that much for her, so I called the lactation consultant in tears to try to find out how to get more milk. She said that there is no way (for her age and size) that my LO drinks 8-9 oz when she nurses, so she is overeating from the bottle. She said that a lot of time breastfed babies eat more when fed from a bottle because they need the sucking time (they can finish the same amount from a bottle in less time than from the breast). She suggested that LO is fed 5 oz per feeding (based on eating 2.5 times her weight in lbs divided by the number of times she eats a day = 2.5 x 12 / 6). After she is done with the feeding, she instructed us to give her a pacifier for 5-10 minutes so she can get that sucking time. If she is still acting hungry after that, then give her another ounce or two. I tried this all yesterday (pumping but feeding her those 3 daytime feedings from a bottle) and the first feeding she was not happy when I took the bottle away. I gave her the paci, she still fussed a bit, but after about 7 minutes I burped her and she was satisfied. She fell asleep after the second feeding, and didn't even take the paci after the 3rd feeding and was satisfied. She nursed for her 2 evening feedings as she normally does and still slept through the night as she normally does. I instructed my day care provider to try this today, so we'll say how it goes. I hope this helps you! I know it is stressful for me! Good luck!

  • first day today and my baby ate 4 oz,3oz,then another 3 oz and then fed her once I picked her up.
  • I completely agree that that is over eating. Kellymom.com has a great calculator for determining how much expressed breast milk LO should be consuming. It is NOT the same amount as formula! DS drinks a 4oz bottle, then three more 3oz bottles for a total of 13 oz while I'm gone 9 hours. Breast milk is made to be easily digested and digests in about an hour so it's best to do smaller amounts more frequently. Like she said above they're not fussing from hunger when the bottles done, they just still want to suck and need to be settled down. Bottles empty faster than breasts and they're not used to being shorted on their sucking time.
