i am so excited that Obama is in.
but i am so sad that californians narrowly voted to amend our constitution to discriminate against the rights of gay people. can you imagine a world in which someone would not allow you to marry your soul mate? do you believe for one second that if they replaced the word gay with black this would even stand?
Re: embarrassed to be a californian today
me too
it is a very bittersweet day...
I honestly wan't suprised by the results. It was voted on (not as a constitutional amendment) either 4 or 8 years ago, I don't remember which. Californians voted against gay marriage then as well. The courts overturned it saying it was unconstitutional and I expect the same will happen with this prop.
It is sad for friends of mine, who have been devoted to each other for ten years, cannot enjoy the samne rights as my husband and myself.
They pay their taxes, are stand-up human beings and are all-around amazing people.
I am so saddened that they can be discriminated against based on SOMEONE ELSE'S religious beliefs. I respect your religion, but you thinking something is wrong, doesn't not make it so.
I disagree with this. Why should gay people get some kind of second-rate union? Why not the real thing that we all enjoy? It's just so completely wrong in my mind; I really cannot reconcile any possible excusable reason that gay people don't have the same rights as straight people. I truly believe that one day we will look back on how we treated gay people and we will be ashamed. I just hope that day comes soon.
My silly Lily is almost 4.

Ditto here. Embarassed to be in cali today. Proud of the nation, sad for my state. I feel only mildly pleased with prop 4 losing too bc I'm still angry that it was on the ballot at all! Such high hopes yesterday and only mixed feelings today. Why can't progress be absolute?
And as far as civil unions are concerned, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Bd. of Education in 1954 that separate is inherently unequal. Separate institutions are not equal institutions (if they were equal, why separate?) and therefore civil unions are inherently unequal--and unconsitutional.
The state has already had gay marriages and I have yet to see a straight marriage that fell apart as a result. I have a real issue with the stand of "protect marriage." Protect marriage from WHAT?!
so sad today. :-(
