Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Those whose LO's have had an ear infection

DD keeps tilting her head to one side and rubbing it against her arm/shoulder.  She's not wanting to take a bottle, she fights and screams when we try to give her one.  She'll eventually start sucking but then pushes it away after like 3 oz.  What say you?  Ear infection?  Teething?  Attitude problem?  She's fighting naps in her crib but will fall asleep in the car without much fuss.

We're out of town and I'm debating taking her to a clinic to get looked at.  I think she feels warm but I don't have a thermometer with me.  MIL is going to get one when she goes out this afternoon.

  • Is anything going to go right for you on this trip? I hope she feels better soon, whatever it is.

  • When Noelle has them (yes plural - waiting for doc to mention tubes) she will take a bottle fine but refuses solids.  She also hasn't ever had a fever with either of them.

My best advice is to just call and check.  Each time I've done this she's had an infection and the antibiotics take the pain away pretty quickly.

ETA: since you're out of town - try laying her on her back and see if she fights it/screams.  If she does, I'd for sure find a clinic.  Laying on their backs is painful when their ears are infected.  Has she had a runny nose at all?  Ear infection symptoms are just like teething symptoms in many cases.

She's doing the opposite, chowing solids and refusing bottles.  I'm leaning towards teething but I don't know.  She's crashed out right now, I'll see how she's doing when she wakes up.

  • It does sound like a possible ear infection. My pedi said that babies don't like laying flat when they sleep when they have an ear infection - possible reason for sleeping well in the car seat.

I agree with LG. And to add, the symptoms can come one in like an instant. I took Grant on a Monday to have him checked. He was fine. He woke up tuesday screaming like crazy. His eardrum had ruptured from the pressure not even 24 hours after being checked.

Did you see my edit?   If she's upset when you lay her on her back I'd bring her somewhere.  If not, I might just try Tylenol and see how she is later on.

    Good luck!

This is where the attitude problem question comes in.  If I lie her flat in my arms, she doesn't make a peep, but if I place her in her crib, she freaks out.  Remember, we're in MA, we're not at home and it's an unfamiliar room.  She could be scared.  When I handed her her lovey (which I forgot to give her for the last 2 days because I'm an awful person) she calmed down, placed it over her face and passed the eff out.

I did give her some ibuprofen, but I'm not sure if it helped.

  • C had every single one of those symptoms a few weeks back and I thought it was teething. I ended up taking her to the pedi to be "sure" and it was an ear infection. Might not hurt to take her in if you can.

Yeah since you're out of town maybe I'd just watch her for now.  When Noelle has them she'll be playing fine then suddenly she'll just stop and start screaming/hitting the side of her head.  Like the fluid moved or something.

Usually they also have some cold symptom for a day or two prior to the infection.  If Lainey has been fine then my guess is teeth and/or attitude problem (which Noelle also gets quite regularly)  Ha.

  • When Kenley had an ear infection, she would scream if I offered her a bottle.  She took her solids just fine, and her paci didn't seem to bother her, but the sucking/swallowing of the bottle evidentally hurt her.  She ran a fever, and would NOT sleep unless I was holding her.  I would probably have her checked out, just to be on the safe side, because they can start spiking a pretty high fever once the infection sets in.

  • I had this same trip this past week!  She started with a runny nose and wouldn't drink her bottles and only wanted solids.  She also pulled on her ear.  I took her today and she said no ear infection but she thought she had some fluid and gave her some meds!

  • We're on the 3rd type of antibiotic to get rid of G's ear infection. He had a horrible cough with his, too. He didn't pull on his ears until after the 1st round of antibiotics didn't work. At this point our Dr. told us it was "one of the worst ears" she'd ever seen.

I'd have her checked out to be safe so that it DOESN'T get too severe if it is an ear infection. However, I did read that when ear tugging is the primary symptom, it's rarely an ear infection. Usually it's just the child "finding" his/her ears.

  • DS has had two and we are still on round two of meds because his one infection won't go away.  That was exactly what he was doing at the same time he was cutting a tooth.  I'm not sure whether his behaviors were more because of the ear or the teeth or as a result of the combination of two.  But, I would definitely get her in to a clinic.  It could be from the plane - didn't you say in an earlier post that you flew with her somewhere?

Also - DS never had a fever with either ear infections.  He was perfectly normal except for eating less, fussier with nursing/bottles, and pulling on his ear.

  • She woke up from her nap, chowed 5 oz without so much as a fuss and is now contently taking army crawl run #4 at the entertainment center as if one of these times we might not stop her.  She's also contemplating pulling up on the coffee table for the first time.  I think she's fine, she likes making me look like a fool.
