Gardeners please come in!

Good morning lovlies :)

My neighbors brought over some Cabbage and Pumpkin starts yesterday that they didnt have room to plant. I want to give them a try but have a black thumb... Any advice? Do they like lots of sun or not so much? Straight in the ground or in a big pot? I am clueless...

TIA!!

Re: Gardeners please come in!

  • I'm not sure about the sun thing (I would assume they did, but who knows!)  How big are the starts?  If they are pretty small I would put them in pots to begin with and then move them to the ground as they got bigger.  If they are bigger already, I would put them in the ground.

How fun to have your own pumpkins this year!

    Good luck!

  • You could put either one right in the ground (the temperature is right), but they'll do well in containers, and if you don't have an existing veg. garden, then that's probably better soil-wise.  This late in the season you won't want to transplant again, or you'll risk disturbing it too much and preventing growth, so plant them where you want to keep them.  Cabbage is pretty contained (~1 sq ft), but pumpkins produce a lot of leafy vines, so put it somewhere you can have space for that (wrap them around the pot, trail them along a fence, put in cages/stakes/other climber hardware and drape them on that).

The pumpkins don't require much care: best for sun in morning/eve (not hot mid-day sun), once they begin to fruit, pull off the extra blossoms to encourage the pumpkins to grow bigger (or don't, and you'll have more, small pumpkins).  I think cabbage prefers partial shade, but you'll want to verify that (there may be a stake in the planter that says what this variety needs).
