Not very artsy with the girls

I have a hard time thinking of arts & craft ideas to do with the girls other than coloring or play-doh.  We do lots of playing with toys and playing outside but my mind goes blank when it comes to creative ideas, especially when I have to entertain both at the same time.  Am I the only one who struggles with this and thus, doesn't do many artsy activities with little ones?

  • how about collages on certain theme, sticker art, make maracas w/ water bottles, sticks and rice, make a felt puppet (last two ideas are from nick jr). We don't do many art projects but he does a bunch at school. Maybe try searching on nick jr.  Now you have inspired me to do at least one art project a week w/ Nic.

  • "painting" with shaving cream or koolaid are also fun.  For the koolaid you just put the dry koolaid out and use qtips or cotton balls dipped in water to paint.  When I taught preschool my kiddos love those.  Shaving cream also smells pretty good.

I was also going to suggest shaving cream. Do it on a colored piece of construction paper, so the shaving cream will lighten up the paper. I remember in pre-school we used a dark blue piece and drew snowmen on them.

You can also paint outside with water. Give the girls a cup of water and let them paint the sidewalk or even the side of the house with water. Again, I did this in preschool and thought painting on the side of the brick building was so cool and "naughty."

Get eggs that come in a cardboard or styrofoam container (not plastic). The girls that turn them into caterpillars, using pipe cleaners for antenna and coloring each of the humps.

Get an old rectangular pie pan and put a piece of paper the size of the pan in the bottom. Put one or two colors of paint in the bottom and put a marble or other small ball in it. Let the girls tilt the pan around so that the marble(s) make a design with the paint.

Hope at least one of these helps!

  • I like to do crafty stuff myself, but I admit I don't do much with Holly. She does a lot at daycare though, so I feel like I'm off the hook. LOL.

One thing we have done that she loves is stamps. I found some 3-sided foam stamps in the dollar spot at Target, and a few cheap stamp pads. She had a blast with them. We haven't done it since because I want to find some washable ink. These were pigment dyes (like for scrapbooking or something), and well, she had blue fingers for the rest of the day. :-) I thought doing some kind of fingerprint art would be fun too, but again--not until I get different stamp pads :-)

  • I struggle with this too. We have tons of art supplies, thanks to my mom. We have done a few painting projects and sometimes he practices with his scissors. I think the hardest part is that most craft projects need to be pre-planned, supplies cut and prepped. I never think to do that so when I'm looking for a project I don't feel ready.

This website, Paint & Prozac has some good basic toddler crafts. She does a lot of painting in a ziploc bag to cut down on the mess.

This post has given me the idea to prep some crafts and have ideas ready to go! I love doing art time with Caleb!

  • I was pretty clueless until I walked down the aisles at Michael's and they have so many projects that are all packaged together and ready to do.  Also, I've just picked up their supplies and made up my own crafts.  I also like to look at nick jr online.  They have lots of ideas and it incorporates characters so I think that makes R like it more.
