LIFE or DEATH dilemma

So, pickled beets are pretty much my favorite thing ever. We have ONE/UNO/YI/1 can in the entire house, and it was chilling nicely in the fridge.

I just opened it. I suck at opening cans. It took me a sec to even get it started. And then the entire lid just popped off all at once and I almost spilled the damn thing everywhere. Then I realized since it popped off so fast...I didn't hear the button on the seal pop. Which, who pays attention to that right? But I pushed down on the button, and it resisted, which makes me wonder if it was even down to begin with? And I really want me some pickled beets. Would you freak out and throw the can away? Or risk certain death because WHO THE FVCK actually listens for the seal to pop anyway? Can pickled things even get botulism?

  • I would totally eat them.  But I'm not weird about that kind of stuff.  DH would probably throw them away.

  • Yeah I'm gonna go with the PP and say DOOOOO IIIIIIITTTT!  At least you'll die happy that you got to eat your most favoritest food!!

I will add however that I dont always hear the pop if I'm otherwise distracted.  So I'd say in all likelihood you'll be fine.

uhm, canned stuff is where botulism is actually scary dangerous.

I assume, though, that these are commercially made, not home-canned?

Can you get botulism from stuff in jars?  I assumed that's what Navy was referring to when she talked about the button popping, since a commercially canned item  would come in a can and you'd have to use an opener.

the 'traditional' way to get botulism is from badly-sterilized home-canned-goods...in jars.

Which is why I'll eat off the floor my dog licks but...uhm, I probably wouldn't eat these.

  • it's commercially canned in a glass jar. I put them back in the fridge to deliberate while I put on my makeup but I think I'll go for it. If it was home canned and I didn't hear it? Oh hell no. But...when's the last time you heard of botulism from commercially canned stuff right?

Also, if I never post again, you all know what happened lol.

I'll pour a little beet juice out to remember my fallen homie.

  • Go ahead and enjoy them!! You are right, pickled foods can not get botulism, the Ph balance is way to acidic for bacteria to live. Enjoy!!!

    Double this!

And I must be one of the weird ones that wouldn't eat it. I'm really weird when it comes to that stuff though. If anything in my fridge is the day before, day of, and totally day after the dates listed, I won't go near it.
