Natural Birth

Silly question about water birth attire ...

I dont know why Im fixated on this subject when I know its not really going to matter in the moment .... but here we are.

I know that our birth is baby?s show (hell come where and how he pleases) BUT my birth plan is to labor quite awhile in the tub.

We are at a birthing center, and I only plan on having DH and my mom there for the birth, so the option to go with no clothes is there .... but ..... depending on how long I am actually in labor, Im not sure I want to be nude the entire time.

Would a bikini top be sufficient?  Would a longer tankini that covers the belly be restrictive?

I know this seems like a trivial question - but TIA!

  • I went naked with Lily, but I am considering a bikini top this time so I can actually show people some of our first photos with the baby. :b

  • I plan on wearing a bikini top -- that way, if it's still on when LO is born, it can come off quickly for skin to skin.

  • I ended up only in a bra with both labors. I wore a sports bra when I was in the tub with my first labor, but I think a bikini top would have been better.

  • Not a silly question at all!  It's very important that you are totally comfortable.  I would not wear anything covering your belly - probably be annoying.  I wore a maternity swimsuit top last time that had a cut down the middle which made the suit float up and it was obnoxious and made for poor pictures. This time I'm wearing a super comfy barely there bra top that fastens in the back so I can quickly get it off before the baby comes for cuddling time with him/her skin to skin on my chest.  Bikini top would work well for getting on/off easily.  I hate halters/ties around my neck (boobs weigh top down) but if it's comfy for you then go for it.  I wouldn't wear anythign you have to pull off over your head as that may be difficult when wet and laboring.

    Hope this helps!

  • I wore a sports bra in a size bigger than I needed.  Comfortable, and easy to remove when I got out of the water.  Good luck!

  • For me personally I didn't want to be totally naked.  I labored and delivered in a tub.  I wore a bikini top.  A tankini top would have definitely annoyed me (they annoy me anyway since they float up), but the bikini top didn't and was easy enough to take off shortly after to nurse.  And it was great that DH was taking pictures right away and I can show those pictures to people because my top is covered by the binkini top and my bottom is submerged in water.  One of the pictures he took is one of my favorite pictures of all time.

You can bring it and always decide not to wear it to, but if you don't bring it you can't decide you'd rather wear it.  A bikini top doesn't take up much room.

  • I wore a nursing bra (sports bra type).

  • I wore a nursing sports bra in the tub-- it was perfect.

  • I thought I was going to wear a sports bra but when I was in labor I didn't want anything at all and was naked. I totally didn't care, but I see how some people would want to be covered up.

  • I am bringing a black nursing bra to wear in the tub.  A bathing suit top would be great, but I cannot stand having anything around my neck.  I am also having a birth photographer and would like to actually be able to show some photos, so I don't want to be completely naked in the tub!
  • I ended up not having time for a water birth, but I had planned on wearing a sports bra or bikini top.  I wouldn't wear a tankini because having something on your belly might be annoying during labor.
