Celiac Disease...

DH was just diagnosed.  Does anyone have experience with this?  Did you go gluten free for the whole family or just the person who was diagnosed?  Is it easier to find the foods online or at Whole Foods?  TIA

Re: Celiac Disease...

  • I used to have a step-sister who had celiac disease.  She was the only one in the family who went gluten free.  The gluten free foods can be more expensive that regular & honestly - breads & pasta with gluten do taste better.  Sorry!

I am gluten free right now due to some breastfeeding issues.  I find most of my stuff at the healfood store.  Just make sure you read the lables for everything!   I got a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store the other night - not thinking anything of it - apparantly it had wheat starch in it - lovely.

There is also a lot of information & support online.

    Good luck!

  • I don't have celiac's, but had a wheat intolerance since I was 5. Now that allergens HAVE to be listed on food labels its a whole lot easier to know what can and cannot be eaten.  Ingredients like modified food starch contain wheat, and you never would have known a decade ago.

Supermarkets are carrying a whole lot more in their natural foods aisles, and it will be marked gluten-free (pastas, flours, cookies etc). Whole foods and Trader Joe's also have a good amount of gluten free foods/ ingredients.

https://www.glutenfree.com/ is the best website I've found for shopping...

I would also invest in a gluten-free cookbook and bread machine since getting all prepared foods can be more expensivee than making your own.

Lastly https://www.redbridgebeer.com/ gluten free beer!! (thank goodness)

And sadly, my husband will not go gluten-free...
