Poll! How long was your first

I know everyone is different but I'm curious. How long was your first pregnancy? and How long was your labor?

I had my first (completely unnecessary) internal today. I have had no contractions and I don't even think I've been having Braxton Hicks. I'm thinking this baby might make a July debut. I know it's still early to tell but being 36 weeks and feeling NOTHING contractions or BH wise makes me think she's pretty comfy in there.

Re: Poll! How long was your first

  • Cedric was born at 38 weeks and 5 days.  I didn't have any braxton hicks or any thing like that either before.  My water broke, but didn't really start contractions on my own.  So after about 17 hours (of nothing, he didn't want to come out!)  they put me on pitocin.  Then I had him 8 hours later.

  • Almost exactly 40 weeks, off by like 2 days.  I had 28 hr labor but ended in a c-section.  Without the factors that led to a c-section I am guessing my labor would have been around 18-20 hrs or so.  I had lots of BH though starting around 20 weeks but felt fantastic the weekend I went into labor, never saw it coming.

I know it's totally random but the fact that I haven't had any BH weirds me out. This makes me feel better.

  • I had major BH both pregnancies (DS 1 started at 20 or so weeks, DS 2 started at 17 weeks), DS 1- born on due date, 12 1/2 hours labor, DS 2- born 40w 3d, 16 hours labor. So much for the second LO coming earlier and faster eh?

  • No BH's at all and Jackson was born at 38 weeks exactly, labor was just over 8 hours.  Started losing my MP on Friday, went to a wedding Saturday and woke up at 2:30am Sunday morning and my water broke around 3 - he was born at 11:16am.

I was totally expecting to be late (my mom was late with me and my brother) and did not expect my labor to be so fast given that I was a first time Mom, so I went completely against the norm there.

  • I went into labor at 41w3d. I was scheduled to be induced the next day! I had 15 hours of back labor and then an emergency c-section. I only progressed from 3 to 5 centimeters in that time!

  • Gave birth at 37 weeks on the dot and my active labor was apparently around 6 hours and I pushed for about ten minutes.

Of course i had contractions for two solid weeks 4-5 minutes apart before that!

  • With DS, I had pre term labor at 29 weeks.  Stopped with meds and bedrest.  I had contractions off and on the whole third trimester, and was 3 cm dilated until 39 weeks, when I went to 4 cm.  I went post term to 41 weeks and got an induction.  How often does that happen?  I labored for 32 hours and had a vaginal birth.

What did you do to anger the pregnancy/delivery Gods?  You peed in their cheerios didn't you???  ;)

Just kidding! though seriously going from preterm to late like that I would be angry after having to take all the meds!

  • I never had any signs of labor. No BH, no dilation, never lost my mucus plug, nothing, even at over 38 weeks, when I was induced. It got to the point that I was pretty convinced I was never going to actually go into labor on my own. I was partially right. I was induced after an u/s revealed that she was going to be very tiny and might need "help."

  • I was 37 weeks when my water broke.  I was in labor for 20 hours, pushing for 1 hour 40 minutes.  When I had my first internal 5 days before the water broke, I was 0/0.  It can happen!
  • #1, 40w3d. After an NST and internal exam earlier that day my Water broke at 11pm in bed, Maggie born at 7:10 AM. So about 8 hrs active labor. I'd been having contractions on and off for a couple days prior. #2, 41w, had an NST, biophysical that morning. I had contractions since 5 am that got more closely spaced by 4pm, then were 5 minutes apart by 6 so we went to the hospital. Owen was born at 12:25am. So I'd say about 8 hrs active labor but 18 hrs of contractions.

  • DS was born at 40w1d.  I had no BH contractions or any contractions at all until my water broke.  I was never dilated at any of my appointments, only 50% effaced.  When they admitted me to L&D they said they were being generous calling me 1/2 cm dilated.  I labored for about 19 hours from the time my water broke.  I did need pitocin shortly after my epidural when my progress slowed and that did the trick.

  • #1- No major contraction or BH, just some BH towards the ends.  Induced at 40 weeks exactly...total time of induction, pushing, then a c-section was 22 hours.

#2 - Major BH starting somewhere around 20 weeks.  Started having much more intense contractions about a month before my due date. Went into labor on my own at 37w3d.  I was 3 cm at my appoinment at 37w2d and went into labor early that next morning.  I was 6 cm by the time I got to the hospital.  Total labor from first contraction to my VBAC delivery was just about 10 hours.

  • My water broke at 39 weeks 3 days. I labored for 23 hours and ended up in a c-section delivering at 39 weeks 4 days.

(Just for the sake of not leaving out my second child :P my water broke at exactly 38 weeks and I delivered the same day)

  • DD was born 40w1d No major BH contractions, water never broke, no mucous plug, no bloody show, etc. Labor itself I would say was 9pm until 2pm then next day when I had an emergency C-section. So about 17 hours. Without the section who knows much longer.

  • Was anyone else thinking this question was a little "juicier" when they read the title?

    No? Me either.

Ummm, Jack was 10 days late. C sec.

Sawyer was planned, 6 days early. C sec.

  • My water broke at 39 weeks.  I didn't realize it, though, until about 12 hours later.  (Long story, not your typical gush of water).  I ended up being in labor for 35 hours from the time my water broke (10 PM on a Thursday) till 9 AM on Saturday, when he was born.  Even though I was finally fully dilated after 35 hours, it ended in a c-section when he didn't descend through the birth canal.  Official reason: failure to progress.

And he is still that stubborn today, almost 4 years later.

  • My water broke at 40 weeks, 1 day, but I didn't have regular contractions on my own for quite a while, so the doc put me on pitocin.  Brady was born the following day.  All in all, after my water broke, my labor lasted 21 hours.

Yeah, I totally did.  I was shocked that there were so many replies!

  • I had zero contractions on my own. I was induced at 38 weeks due to low amniotic fluid and Nora was born at 38 weeks, 2 days.
  • My water broke at 40w 6d and when I got to the hosptial I was already 5cm without having noticeable contractions. I delivered about 9 hours after my water broke. I w

  • I had Logan at 39w4d.  Labor was about 14 hours, nearly 3 of those spent pushing.  My big headed son needed a forceps delivery.  I never had BH.

  • I went into labor at 40w4d. I think things started the night before, but I didn't really recognize them as signs of labor. We called the OB around 2:00 in the morning and he was born exactly 12 hours later.

  • DS was born at 40w (27 minutes after his due date at 12:27am).  Emergency c-section- I hemorrhaged and they had to deliver him immediately.  No labor pains, no contractions.

  • I started with preterm labor at 28w, was put on bedrest and meds until 36w. I walked around at 1-2 cm for 2 months. My water broke in the morning when I was 36w 4d, it wasn't a gush of fluid just felt like I was constantly peeing my pants.

Water broke around 6 am, and DS was born just before 6 pm, after 3 hours of pushing. (NOT fun!)

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • At 36 weeks I delivered 4 hours after my water broke. Three of those hours were spent pushing.

I didn't have any BH or contractions until after my water broke. You never know!

  • I went into labor at 40w6d after taking castor oil the night before.  They wanted to induce me at 41w and it was my last resort.  I was having contractions starting around 9am, and I delivered Ethan at 4:19am the next morning.  I never had any contractions beforehand, and my water did not break before I went to the hospital.  I was nearly 5cm when I arrived.

  • I was 39wks 6 days but I was induced due to Gestational Diabetes. Once I was given petocin I was in labor less than 12 hours.  I was 1cm dilated at 39 and when I went in for the induction I was 3cm.

I'm anxious to see.  My mom was late with all 3 of her kids, but had really quick labors.  I hope I'm not as late as her, but have the quick labors she had!

  • Alex was born at 38 weeks and 5 days.  I had a false labor with him once I think, but I was getting internals at 36 wks. and was dialating already.

Cameron was on the same track only I had far more contractions (BH) with him for about 3 or 4 solid weeks.  I was certain he was going to come early.  I was induced with him 2 days before my EDD.

Both L&Ds were 16 hours.  They weren't bad at all, but different.  My water broke and I got the epi almost immediately with Alex and then slept until I needed to push :)  With Cameron I was induced and held off on getting the epi until it was over 12 hours into it.  He came about 3 hours later and I imagine he would've come that soon had I gotten the epi earlier.

I can't believe you're already so far along!!

  • Marissa was born at 37 weeks by emergency c-section, due to pre-eclampsia.
  • I never had any Braxton Hicks Contractions.  My water broke around 11 PM at 39 weeks 1 day.  Because I had no contractions and was only a fingertip dilated, I was induced.  She was born around 2 the next afternoon following 2 and a half hours of pushing - not fun - but worth it.
