Keurig anyone?

DH really wants a Keurig.

He's the only coffee drinker in the house, generally drinks 1-2 cups a day and is only really here Sat/Sun.  So I agree that this system would be more convenient & less wasteful is some respects.  However, I can't get over the fact that he'd be throwing away individual plastic "cups" with every brew.  I assume these can't be recycled?  Also, those suckers aren't cheap.  Oh, my Dad is an avid coffee drinker (like constant throughout the day/night) and he visits 3-4 times a year so I'm thinking about keeping our old coffeemaker around for those times.

I found this alternative, a reusable "k-cup".

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it?  The reviews on Amazon look mixed.

Any thoughts/opinions/experience on the Keurig machine in general are also appreciated.  TIA!

  • I love mine! The reusable thing doesn't work at all. We also use it to make oatmeal, hot chocolate and tea by just skipping the cup part, so it's basically a hot water maker. :)

    What Megan said :)

DH has one and LOVES it. We kept our old coffeemaker for when family visits but that's only once or twice a year. I use it for hot chocolate and oatmeal since I don't drink coffee.

  • I love mine too. The reusable thing works fine on mine. I use it about half of the time. I hate throwing away the cups every time. I do pull the foil off the top and dump the grounds in the compost, but still, that's a lot of plastic, especially since I drink far too much coffee.

  • We love ours, too, though we are very wasteful with the cups. We don't even have one of the re-useable kind!

  • i friggin LOVE the keurig!!!  my gpa has one and has the kcup thingy where you use your own coffee, and honestly i thought it was awfully messy. the kcups you buy w/ the coffee are way better than using your own (taste wise).

i have this but a much older model and it works great for me and is super easy to use.  i use regular coffee filters in it.  i think they make a small reusable one too that would fit in it.

  • My office had one and I liked the coffee it made (once you figure out what kcup you like)...but it does make a lot of trash.

That said, if DH said he really wanted one I very likely would buy it for him regardless because he doesn't say that very often/about many things.

Now, if $ wasn't an issue I'd get an automated espresso maker like this that  uses whole beans, but brews one or two cups at a time.   That's on my "one day" wish list. Wink

  • We have one and stopped using it, personally I think its a hyped up product that after a year or so starts getting clogged and the flavor looses its luster, there is no way to clean it, I tried vinegar like you would a normal coffee maker and I could taste it for a month. I stopped using it and got me a french coffee press! the coffee is so amazingly wonderful, rich and bold and its so easy to make, no more paper filters or plastic cups to throw out, I compost the grounds in my garden so I have NO WASTE AT ALL and its so much more yummier!
  • I have a Tassimo unit and love it. They have t-disc and a recycle program. They send you a return label and you ship the disc. The only down fall is I have to order online because they only sell 2 types of their coffee at the stores near me. They sell the k-cups though. I would buy a Keurig now if our machine was only a year old. I wonder if they recycle like the Tassimo?
  • keurig makes a reusable cup, my computer is bing weird and i cant see your link, the reusable cup works great for us!
