Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tried rice cereal last night...

I think she liked it, but not too sure. I put it in her bottle before bedtime, but she was really gassy yesterday and wasn't eating much to begin with. She only took 3 ounces of the 6 I made for her, and was crying due to the gas discomforth (daycare told me she was cranky a lot during the day). She finally went down about 11 and slept until 6:30 this morning. We'll see what happens tonight. Hopefully it helps her sleep a little bit longer, though I know it's not always true that because they have cereal they will.

Re: Tried rice cereal last night...

  • You know that rice cereal will only make her gassier, right? My DD slept worse after starting rice cereal, she also became constipated, so we switched to oatmeal.

  • She drinks the Enfamil AR which has the rice starch in it and she's been fine. We use baby gas-x when needed. She normally isn't gassy or constipated at all.

  • I'm not trying to flame here but rice cereal in the bottle is really only recommended for babies with reflux.  If you want to start her on solids now, you should probably try a spoon.  Have you talked to your pedi about it?

  • I'm with MandC17 on this one.
  • Flame away...

My 3 sisters and I grew up with rice cereal in our bottles from 1 month on and we all turned out just fine.

  • It doesn't necessarily help with STTN.  DD has been on rice cereal for reflux since about 2.5 months.  It didn't help her STTN...but it did make  her more regular which is odd.

  • I said that I wasn't flaming, but the argument that you did something and you "turned out fine" is ridiculous.  When my dad was a baby he was put in the back seat with pillow in case he rolled in the floor and yeah he's fine.  Does that mean you are not going to put your child in a carseat. Today's research has shown that cereal in a bottle can be a choking hazard and it isn't recommended except in the case of reflux.

Mrs. H, your reasoning seems off to me.  As you know, there are lots of things that were done in the past that we all survived that are not recommended now. Is giving rice cereal going to kill your DC?  Doubtful, but I am curious as to why you think your DC needs rice cereal now.  Do you think it will help her STTN?  Do you think she's ready for solids?  If your reasoning truly is b/c your mom did it when you were little, why would you want to give your DC something that is not needed?

As PP have said, if you think your DC is ready for solids then just talk to your pedi and try the rice cereal with a spoon.

  • I didn't do it just  because my mom did it, and I didn't do it because I thought it would help her STTN. I gave it to her because I believe she is ready to start on some solids. I talked to the pedi and he said to just start out with a few flakes in the bottle or on the spoon. She is drinking a lot of formula and this should give her the little bit of extra that she needs to help her feel full.

People on this board are WAY too touchy.

Mrs. H, you only got those responses b/c of the way you answered the question.  Saying your mom did it so it's okay is bound to bring flames.  If you would've said what you did in this post, you would not have gotten those responses.

I hope the solids go well for you.  FWIW, I thought my DS was ready at 4 mos and so did my pedi, but he's not.  I didn't put it in his bottle, just tried it on a spoon and he hated the rice, oatmeal and the sweet potatoes I tried.  We're taking a break and will try again in a few weeks.
