I want to start building up a freezer stash for when I go back to work in two weeks, but I can't seem to get a good idea of when to pump!
Do you pump after you feed LO and just collect throughout the day, or do you pump during a particularly long nap?
It seems like whenever I pump LO wakes up and I end up feeding it to her since she doesn't seem to be getting enough from me due to the pumping.
Also, I get about 2 oz per breast when I pump, does that seem about right or should I work on increasing my production?
Would love some advice!
Re: When do you pump to build up a freezer stash?
I've heard the opposite -that most women produce more in the mornings. I pump after the first morning feeding (or sometimes the second if Drew is awake early and DH is still in the shower). That's always worked well for me.
As pp said, you may not get a lot at first b/c your body isn't used to making extra. Keep in mind that you're pumping in addition to feedings right now and when you return to work you'll be pumping in place of them. Hopefully you'll be pumping what you need each day to replace what LO is drinking and you won't need that stash of yours. My milk supply is larger in the morning. (I thought this was the case for most women.) I pump right after DD's first morning feeding. I usually only feed her on one side and then I pump both sides getting about 8oz in 5 minutes or so.
I think feeding on one side while simultaneously pumping on the other is a great idea- if you can manage it.
I need to be more disciplined about pumping. I could probably do it more than once a day and as it is now sometimes I skip that one pumping session. I'll be sorry when I'm back to work and don't have a freezer stash to fall back on.
