Spit up, drool, neck gunk and rashes

DS has a constant red rash in his neck. I clean it often with Cetaphil and apply some good Aveeno lotion (which we use for DD's eczema) to it, which helps, but then he continues to spit up and drool in it and it flares up again.

What are you putting on your LO's neck? Anything seem to work? It looks painful.

Re: Spit up, drool, neck gunk and rashes

  • I use the Cetaphil cream (not lotion b/c lotions contain alcohol which can be drying) and it works like a charm.  DS had some funky red bumps on his neck, face, and chest which the pedi said was heat rash.  This helped clear it up.  Also make sure to keep him as cool and dry as possible.  Good luck!

  • I tried lotion and it didn't work, so I put diaper cream in there. It's the same idea as a diaper rash so I thought it might work and it did. It cleared up pretty fast. So not I just put a little on it every few days.

  • My pedi recommends a thin layer of hydrocortisone if C gets a little skin irritation.  SHe als osaid to use Eucerin or something similar instead of good ol' Johnson & Johnson baby lotion because it is more water-based and doesn't moisturize the skin as well.

  • I was going to post the same question, except LO has the drool rash on her cheeks and chin. I'm not sure diaper rash cream would be a good idea around her mouth....any other ideas?  Maybe just keep a washcloth nearby to clean up the drool? But that might irritate her skin after a while....  Hmmm...

This. Also, as a preventative, after DS has a bath, and hes all clean.. I sprinkle just a little bit of baby powder on my fingers, and try to get in between his little folds on his neck. Just a little bit for extra dryness. It has worked wonders. I no longer even have to use diaper rash cream anymore.

Baby powder works wonders on DD

  • I heard someone using vasoline on the rashy areas

  • Not sure if this would work, but when I'm looking to create a moisture barrier for DS's tush I use lanolin because I already have a tube around for me (and I don't use most diaper cream's because we CD). It basically acts like chap stick and it stays on for a while. I'm sure it could work for the neck too (as long as you don't mind him looking a little greasy!) DS is a huge drooler and we go through about 5 plastic backed bibs a day trying to keep that area dry. Fortunately he hasn't developed a rash there yet.

  • I use Aquaphor and it works pretty well. After her bath I'll rub it in her neck, under her armpits, and on her butt. It seems to protect pretty well and the lanolin in it will sooth any pain. I tried diaper rash creme a few times but stopped because I didn't want her to accidentally touch it with her hand and then put her hand in her mouth.

  • Good ideas in here.

We use Boudreax Butt Paste, so not the traditional diaper creme. I think I'll start with Lanolin. I still use it on 4 YO DD when she gets a sore nose from a cold or chapped lips. I bet that works well! If that doesn't clear it up, I'll go with some diaper cream.

  • We used diaper cream for DS' neck as well and the rash was gone in a day. We Put vaseoline in there too as a water barrier. 1ht
  • I used corn starch on DDs neck folds when it started getting red from drool and milk. It worked really well, it was almost cleared up over night. I try and keep her neck dry during the day and apply the corn starch at night after her bath.

  • DS spits up a lot so he gets really red and irritated in his neck folds so we after we give him his bath I dry his neck and put on California Baby Calednula Cream. We also use it on his face. You can find it at Target. It is my go to cream for any skin problems for DS and it works like a charm.

  • Boudreax Baby Kisses is made for irritation from drool.   You can put it on LO's cheeks and neck.

Yup Calendula cream one by california baby and another I picked up at whole foods, there is a Calendula wash I bought as welida is the company that makes it.  It was kinda pricey, but has worked well.
