People Clicking Tounge at the Baby?

It seems recently that everyone has started clicking their tounge at the baby (the ped, my uncle, and even the cleaning lady!) and I am trying to figure out why. Can someone please tell me the type of reaction they are expecting to get? LO has clicked back a few times when I tried it, but he usually just stares at them when they do this.

My mil and any older person did that to ds1. I never knew why but the sound was like nails on a chalkboard for me. My mil said it provided stimulation. I told her to just sing instead.

My kids never liked singing when they were babies, so at some point I clicked. My LO Lily thinks its funny, and tries to do it herself. I know my Daughter Autumn's at home teacher said that doing something like that at a baby can help to stimulate the motion that some words use with the tongue. And when they are young they are more about looking at you then exploring. Plus once they figure out how to do it its super cute when they see they can without you doing it first.

  • my grandMIL does this and it annoys the beejezus out of me. She does it so loud and it's beyond annoying.
  • I probably wouldn't do it to someone else's baby, but DS just likes funny sounds so I do it to him all the time. I click, blow raspberries, make kissy noises, etc. etc. He stares at me and smiles and "talks" and it melts my heart so I'll make whatever noises work. :)

  • My Grandma was a clicker, it was her thinking noise. I remember my Grandma doing this to my cousins (and I assume she clicked at me). I make clicking noises to Alice and she likes it. Like pp I make a variety of sounds and faces and she smiles and talks back, its really cute.

  • I have no idea. I do it to my cats to get their attention, so I was surprised when someone did it to my baby. I didn't know it was fairly common and couldn't stop thinking "hes not a cat!" lol

  • I click to little one when I am trying to get the pacifier in as almost a cue that it is coming. But i tend to click to everything because I have horses and it just becomes habit. i have even told my truck whoa before! We are actually at the hospital getting treated for an infection and some of the nurses click, some shush, some talk.  It doesn't bother me which one they do and at almost 3 weeks old LO doesn't seem to have a preference.

  • My mother does it to my DS over skype and I noticed he started really smiling when she did, so I do it all the time and he LOVES it. Who cares if people click their tongue at your LO if he likes it than what does it matter? If it scares him or makes him cry than I would tell people not to do.
