knock knock...you're a racist

so DS who is 9 and on a select basketball team is trying to find 'sponsors' who will pay 25 cents or more per shot he makes in his teams free throw a thon.  we let him knock on a few doors down the street and he came home looking all sad.  why?  well he knocked on a door and someone who was not the home owner answered (they were having a gathering) and the guy yelled in the house "some black kid is at the door"

it breaks my heart that DS had to hear that but DS, DH and I had a very good talk about it.  I know I cant protect him 24/7 from ignorance but I wish I could.

I really wanted to go knock on the door so that same guy would have to yell inside "some angry white woman is at the door and she is calling me out as a racist"

Re: knock knock...you're a racist

  • Unfortunately, it would be a waste of breath. If the A$$hole would say something like that to a little kid, then there is nothing you could say to make him change his attitude. It would only serve to aggitate you even more. I'm sorry your son was so upset.

  • I'm so sorry your baby had to hear that ignorance. My little brother is adopted and he is African American, and my mom always says if anyone treats him differently shiit is going to hit the fan. People can be so rude and disrespectful. I can't believe what this world is coming to.

You made me cry. I would tell someone to never come over to my house again for that.

  • So sorry to hear this! I'm mixed race and when I was younger, would hear some ignorant racial comments as well. It made me wish I was not mixed and could just fit in. In my late teens working in a book store, a customer once referred to me as "that coloured girl". It is such a good thing that you and your H had a good talk with your son about it, that's the most important part. Loving, understanding parents will make everything so much easier for him. Unfortunately ignorant losers like that will always be around, how annoying.
  • I am sorry your son had to hear this. I am also sorry that this guy couldn't see past his skin and see him as a kid.

Wow. I'm so sorry your poor boy had to experience this. Situations like these make me so embarrassed to be an American.

Oh yes, this type of thing ONLY happens in America.

Sorry that happened OP. That's crummy.

  • I'm so sorry!!!!  Glad it resulted in a good conversation.  I worry about my kids growing up biracial as well.  The good news?  Their generation is going to be FULL of kids just like them!  YAY to our generation for so much mixing it up.  Strong, diverse genes & beautiful skin!  :)

I didn't say that it ONLY happens in America. It has been 55 years since the civil rights movement and this type of ignorance still exists. So yeah, I think it's pretty damn embarrassing.

I'll be sure to tell my brother overseas that you are embarrassed to be an American based on one ignorant person's comments. Sure he will appreciate it.

I wasn't aware ignorance was exclusive to America. Thank you for enlightening me.

    Happy Memorial Day!

  • That's very sad, next time you should go with him to help in those situations... Not to mention all the predators out there!!
  • I'm sorry your son had to witness that at such a young age.  Unfortunately he will see much more of that as he gets older so how he responds and you respond as his mother is key.

I understood the american comment as it was here and not Zimbabwe, but trolls will be trolls.
