We went to a playground today was Joy was swinging and loving it. Another family came and the minute they walked into the playground the dad lit a cigarette. It didn't bother us until he decided to sit down three swings away from Joy.
I just grabbed Joy and walked to the other side. DH wanted to ask him to put it out, but I don't know...I guess we just wanted to avoid any confrontation and ended up not saying anything.
We feel like a playground should be smoke free if there are other families present. If someone does need to smoke, at least have the decency to stay clear of other families.
What do you think? And would you have said something?
Re: Would you say something?
You can?t control what idiots do outside on public land. You could have said something but you had no real grounds to, you know?
I don?t get it though. I was a smoker before I had kids and I knew enough not to smoke at ?kid? places. How do parents not know this?
Sweet, Ronan's gonna be a total flamer then, I worked right next to a construction zone most of my pregnancy.
Thanks ladies,I'm glad I'm not the only non-confrontational person out there!
DH and I talked after reading some of your responses and MamaSAS's response gave us an idea. I'm going to talk to a few other mama's at the library storytime we attend and try to get the city to make all children's areas in the city smoke free. Maybe a petition will help us.
It just worries me because what if a child has a respiratory issue and someone wants to smoke where they're playing? If there are no "No Smoking" signs then the child will be the person who has to leave, not the smoker.

That's pretty rude. I would have asked him if he wouldn't mind waiting until he left the playground to smoke, not only because of the smoke, but because I dread the thought of some toddler eventually digging his discarded cigarette butt out of the sand and eating it. Playgrounds are no-smoking zones. That should go without saying.
When I was about 7 months pregnant, my H and I were on vacation, and when we were getting into an elevator at the hotel, a guy who was in the elevator with us lit up right next to me in the freaking elevator! I was about to rip him a new one, but another lady who was in the elevator did it before I even could.
Good plan!
I'm pretty confrontational and very passive aggressive so I likely would have said "Excuse me" in a nasty way and the death stare or I would have said "So you smoke around your kids regularly?"
Then we would have left soon after that.
Francesca Pearl is here! Josephine Hope is almost 3!
I would say something if they blew smoke in my face. Or, if there wasn't another place we could go in the playground to play where we wouldn't smell the smoke.
I would have wanted to say something, too. I probably would have done the same thing you guys did...walk away. I think that even if there were signs up, people would smoke. (I worked at a hospital for awhile with No Smoking signs all over the campus and people still lit up. Ugh.)
