Anyone else not taking much mat. leave?

I was wondering if I am the only one that is crazy enough to only take a week off before going back to work?

I see how most people are taking at least 6 weeks. I run my own business and can not afford to take more than that. I have too much work and customers to take care of.

I work about 40-70 hours a week average. I have a 10 year old son and a husband who will hopefully be helpful. I am getting nervous though. (husband has a full time job and averages about 30-40 hours working in my business as well)

I guess we will just take it a day at a time. lol

wow, you're ambitious, in my eyes! But you've BTDT so you know what you can handle!

What kind of business do you run?  Can you bring baby to work with you?

  • Oh wow.  I thought my answer was yes.  I'm only taking 4 weeks, and people have a tendency to make me feel kind of bad for that.  Um, I'm sorry I can't afford nor do I have the luxury of taking more.

Only 1 week does sound a little stressful, IMO, but like cvl said, you've BTDT, so you know what you can handle.

I'd also like to know what kind of business you have?  Also, what's your plan for day care?  Can you bring LO with you?  Or will he/she be going somewhere?

I have a room in my store for my 10 year old son with a couch, tv, xbox360 and will put a pack and play and changing table in there for the new baby.

I am considered one of those "extreme couponers". I have been doing it for over 5 years though. I have a small store (open Friday- Sunday) and shop the rest of the week.

I basically get about 1,000 newspapers a week and shop with those. I then sell the items at a discount of 25- 50% off retail. My store is so busy and so many families count on me to make ends meet, I feel bad for taking more time off than that.

I have to travel about 2 hours to go shopping 2 days a week. My husband will have the baby one day and I have my best friend watching him the other day. The rest of the time it will be all on me. I just worry about the bleeding after and having to shopping all day and the nasty Virginia heat. yuck! lol

wow, that's really interesting! I like that you put your couponing skills to good use and help out those less fortunate. I can see how much you care about your customers based on your returning so quickly!

  • I will be going back to the office about a week to 2 weeks after LO is born.  I help MH run his business and do his paperwork, and I think he is lost without me sometimes.  However, in my office we already have a stash of wipes, a PnP, a swing and a little floor play mat thing.  We also broke down the sectional from our basement den and took the 2 lounger parts to the office so I have somewhere comfortable to cuddle/feed him in both my office and MH office.  So when I am not answering the phone or doing paperwork it won't be much different than being at home

  • We have a business as well, but fortunately no storefront to maintain.  Between DH and I, we will probably spend 10-20 hours a week responding to emails, returning phone calls, generating quotes and setting events (although we booked only a few June events because of LO).  DH will return to his FT job as well after baby is born.  One of us might even have to handle some things from the hospital, but our business is nowhere near as time consuming as yours and most things can be handled from home.

  • I was just accepted to nursing school and will start that full time when baby is 3.5 months, but that requires me to take a couple classes this summer that start when baby is 1 week old.  I know its going to be tough, but I'll just have to pump during breaks and hope I can stay awake during lecture :-)  Like you said, my plan is 1 day at a time!
