Stay at Home Moms

NSAHMR: Traveling question

We are traveling in a few weeks and will be gone for 9 days.  All the reservations are booked, confirmed, and confirmed again lol.  I'm starting to make a list to help with packing.  What's one thing you wouldn't leave home without, but isn't obvious like a toothbrush or underwear? We're going to a cottage in Maine right by the beach and a couple days in Boston, if that helps.

Also, ds isn't the best traveler sleep wise.  Heck, he's not great sleep wise not traveling.  We are staying in a cottage with 2 bedrooms, would you bring the pack and play just in case?  He still fits, I just hate the thought of having to pay the baggage charges for the pack and play.  I hate the idea of losing sleep because we don't have it even worse.

Re: NSAHMR: Traveling question

  • A lot of places have PNP. (We stayed in hotels and they had one for free to use - I brought our own sheets) - but call ahead of time. I took the carseat and stroller (if flying were checked for free). I also brought our microwave sterilizer, and baby spoons. And extra clothes - you never know lol. Other than that a few toys, lots of bibs (unless you are able or willing to do laundry). We bought diapers, wipes and baby food there. - I brought 5 or 6 there and home just in case, but I didn't have the room in the luggage to bring a full supply.

I also brought a sun hat and sunscreen for baby, and her washcloths - they are softer on her skin and was happy I brought them.

I hope this helps, good luck and have a great vacation!

  • ooooh what city in Maine?

we are going to Rockland in a few months for Lobsterfest

I dunno- I am a minimalist when it comes to traveling and packing- so I usually pack light and not worry. I mean really WHAT can't you get if you really REALLY need it.

hmmm the PNP could be an issue- does he sleep at all in a bed? does he 'need' to be contained to chill out/relax and rest?

  • Where in Maine are you going?

Be sure you bring at least one pair of long pants and a sweatshirt for each person. It's normally pleasantly warm (upper 70s to mid 80s) in the summer but there can be days where it gets quite chilly, especially if you're near the water.

  • I wouldn't take the PNP.  I would take tylenol and benedryl.  I would make a plan that you and DH take turns sleeping WITH DS.  That is what we typically do.  Our kids will sleep fine with us - would that work?
  • We'll be at Wells Beach, ME.  We have a family function we have to be present for in Dover, NH but we figured since we're already renting a car, paying for flights, and for a place to stay, we might as well make it a nice family vacation for the three of us.  Also planning on visiting Kittery for Bob's Clam Hut and outlet shopping lol.  DH is originally from Dover, so he knows that whole basic area fairly well.

Stacy, to answer the pack and play question.  He sleeps in a toddler bed now.  The room he will be in has bunk beds, and I'm hoping the bottom bunk is a full so one of us could sleep there with him if need be.  That would simplify things, but I am waiting on the cottage owner to respond to my e-mail to find out if it's a full or twin on the bottom.

We fly every 4-6 months, ever since she was 6 weeks old.  And being in Europe right now, we travel for overnights every 3-6 months.  She is now 2.5.  This is what we do for both

For the plane / car ride

    1. benydryl and tylenol.  since the childrens versions come in 4oz sizes you will need to buy baby versions and up the dosages to the proper amount for your child.  I use benydryl when Monkey cannot pop her ears...it SEEMS to work for her - but it DOES make her wired Tongue Tied
    2. some individually packed snacks.  She likes eating out of packets.  And you can easily grab one when your son gets bored.
    3. I buy small, throwaway toys that she will never ever play with at home.
    4. Ipad or dvd player with his favorite shows (incase you are someplace without tv or at least tv in english).
    5. Alternate the food / new toy / video ONLY when they get noticeably bored.  Give him an opportunity to push himself.

For the actual vacation. - Since you are somewhere you can buy most of everything you need, you dont need to bring much.  Keep your packing light.

    1. Bring his bedtime blanket and pillow (if its not too big).  Make it one that is a bit slept in.  The smell of home is soothing.  I actually have always sprayed DD's lovey blanket with Bath and Bodyworks Sleeptime pillow spray since she was a baby (more for putting her to sleep), but that has been a blessing with out travel too. I can spray down the bedding to match.
    2. bring at least one set of warmer clothes JIK.
    3. Bring two of his favorite sippy cups.  My DD will only use one type and having only one does not work.

Nice!  You'll be just down the road from me in Sanford.  Enjoy your visit!

P.S. I really like the Fisherman's Catch in Wells for a casual seafood dinner.
