2nd Trimester

Rocking Chair question - 2nd time moms come in...

So to make a long story short, I was telling my MALE co-worker yesterday that my husband and I were going out to get a rocker this weekend. He proceeded to tell me that they are really a waste, bc technically its bad to rock your babies to sleep? Is this true? If you don't need one, then why is does everyone have one? Or is he just being an idiot and telling me HIS opinion?

Either way we are getting a rocker.

Re: Rocking Chair question - 2nd time moms come in...

  • His opinion. I am sure others will tell you the same.

I have to say that I hate my rocking chair. So uncomfortable. I wated a glider and think I will get one for the new baby. Much easier to feed in a glider!

  • That's his opinion. I love out rocker, and rocked DD to sleep at bedtime until 12 months and naps until last week. It's not a habit everyone wants to create, but if you enjoy it and are willing to work on breaking the habit later, there is no harm in it. I also loved rocking her during middle of the night feedings.

  • There is a school of thought (my grandmother suffers from it as well) that rocking your baby to sleep is bad because your baby will not be able to sleep without being rocked...  They are insane!  Ignore him!  I personally prefer a glider to a rocker for comfort and refer the motion of a glider to a rocker but get what you are comfortable with and enjoy rocking your LO.
  • Definitely just his opinion.

Are you getting a traditional rocker or a glider? IMO, gliders are much more comfortable than a traditional rocker.

  • As PP said, it is his opinion.  It is the first of many opinions on sleep you will hear.  You will hear of all sorts of "bad" habits you can create putting your child to sleep.  Some people will swear rocking to sleep has no long term effects on sleep habits.  While others will swear that it "ruined" their child and their child couldn't self-soothe. Personally I fall into the camp of it had no long term effects on my children's sleep habits. It was something DH and I enjoyed, they enjoyed, so we did it.

  • I have a glider (an inexpensive one by Storkcraft) and I love it. When I was BFing, we kept it in the living room so I could watch TV and nurse. Now, it's in DS's room, and I feed him his last bottle of the night in it before bed, to sort of help him wind down. It's calming for both of us at the end of a long day.

ETA: After my unexpected c-section, this was also the only comfortable place to sit. Our couches are too soft, and I didn't feel supported enough by them after the surgery.

  • Can someone explain the difference between a rocker and a glider? I always thought a glider is one of those with wood and cushions in the seat part. I thought a rocker (or what I am referring to) looks like a lazy-boy but one of those soft cushion chairs that has fabric over the whole chair.

I do know they have rockers out there that are all completely wood - those are WAY too uncomfortable!!

LOVE our glider, I still use it all of the time, and I occassionally rock my 2.5 year old to slee when he asks for it b/c he is so darn cute and he is my BABY.  He's the best sleeper and has no sleep issues.  I also used it all the time in the beginning to nurse them in.  We use it all of the time to read bedtime books.  don't listen to others tell you what's "bad" to do for YOUR baby, especially before you even have your baby.  Parenting is a lot of trial and error and you will find you do what you need to to make life easier in that moment!

THIS too.  We have a glider and it was invaluable the first year!

  • We already had a recliner that rocks so that is what I have used for both of my kids. I didn't see the point in getting anything new. I plan on using it for this child as well. I love rocking a baby to sleep :)

  • He is an idiot! We rocked our babies to sleep and they are both excellent sleepers now and both have been in "big girl" beds since 16 months

And even if you choose not to rock them to sleep, you still need to sit somewhere while you feed/nurse, or read books or just cuddle. Even if you're into CIO, you will likely rock your baby when s/he is sick.

But don't get a rocker... get a glider!!!!

We spent $900 on ours and absolutely love it... it's worth every penny and I still use it everyday while my youngest takes her cup of milk before bedtime.

Ours is a Dutailier Intermezzo and I love that it looks like a regular chair and not a nursery glider

Gliders can be wooden also... it's all about how it moves.

I suggest going with an upholstered one  :). Much more comfy

  • Some people get in the bad habit of rocking their baby to sleep EVERY night even when they are older. That might be what he is talking about.
