2nd Trimester

The apathy of some people kills me

My SIL stopped by to pick something up and mentioned that she didn't vote today.  She said she couldn't decide between the two candidates, so she figured why bother.  I reminded her that she has a daughter in a school system with a levy up for renewal and that there are many important local and state issues and candidates to vote on.  She looked at me like I was nuts and said "Oh well".

I have also heard of other people voting for Pres. and not voting for anything else on the ballot because they don't care.

As a result, our school levy nearly failed and the State of Ohio just ammended the Ohio Constitution like crazy with some really stupid stuff.

Why don't people care?

  • because they don't think it will effect them directly.

  • Funny - I heard a guy call in to a local conservative talk show earlier.  He was adamant the he wasn't voting because our government are all a bunch of crooks anyway, so he's abstaining from the vote.  Could you BE more stupid.  You don't like the way it is - so you're doing ABSOLUTEY NOTHING to make it different?  WTH?

  • My sis didn't vote either. She's in college and laughed about it saying "Who cares...it's not going to affect her." Dumba$$!
  • Because they aren't educated enough to realize that everything effects them, regardless of how minimal it may seem

Sadly the local issues have much more of a direct effect.

  • That kind of thinking irks me too!
  • Some people cannot see beyond the end of their own nose! But what gets me more, is those who don't vote will be the first to complain when something "goes wrong". If my candidate doesn't win, or doesn't end up doing everything he promised, I will feel comfortable voicing my complaints knowing that today, I took the one voice I have and used it. Some people could care less.

Sorry, that totally turned into a vent

    Embarrassed

  • My sister won't register to vote because she doesn't want to get jury duty!!

  • Because they don't see a direct result, and because sometimes the things that matter to them are buried deep within a bill that has nothing to do with them so they have no clue when/if it passes.  And some are just damn lazy.

    Wow!  That's pretty sad.

  • I know.. makes me crazy too. Certain people I am related to by law only didn't know that there is an election EVERY year.

  • It is easy to be uninformed.  If I weren't a teacher, I probably wouldn't have known 1/2 the issues on the ballot (I taught my students about them for the Kidsvoting so I knew ahead of time).  And with some things I just vote for candidates that my union supports, so I don't feel like I have to be totally informed.

I didn't vote for any judges b/c I know nothing about them.  I wouldn't even know where to go to get accurate information about the judges and why I should or shouldn't keep them in their positions.

Admitting not to apathy here, but ignorance.

Try the League of Women Voters for info on local and state candidates, or go to your Secretary of State's website.  Also, the local paper always does an election special for us the weekend before the election with all of the candidates, info about them and info about the issues.
