You know, the prepared, 8 oz bottles? It would be the easiest for us, but not if TSA insists on opening each bottle. Because then we'd have to use it within an hour or throw it away.
Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3.4 ounces (100ml) and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Officers may ask travelers to open these items to conduct additional screening and passengers should declare them for inspection at the checkpoint. Click here to learn more about 3-1-1
GRRRR. But I'm hoping if it's in a sealed container...
My friend took several of those on a plane with her. TSA did ask to open each one, and she told them if she opened them they would all go bad within the hour (or whatever the time frame is) and she would prefer not to open them for that reason. She and her husband both had to get a pat down, and they went on their way. I have taken several 7 oz bottles of water (and formula in a seperate container) with me on a plane and Ive never been stopped, patted down, nothing.
If you tell them it will go bad, they won't make you open it. I got a seriously biitchy TSA person once, and they wanted me to mix like 20 ounces of formula so they could test it. I told them if I did I would have to use it all in 2 hours, and wouldn't make it to California, and my kid needed to eat. I was nasty back, which probably didn't help. Kill them with kindness, it should be fine.
I took 2 bottles of it on the plane and had no problem. I just told the TSA people before my bag went through the scanner that there was formula in it. They didn't even look at it.

I took a few of the RTF Enfamil cans, and just poured them into the bottle. They allowed it (although did wave their fancy scanner over the formula and everything in my diaper bag).
Thanks, everyone. It sounds like we can take it on the plane and we won't have to open it early, as long as we're willing to spend more time at security. We plan to leave ourselves plenty of time, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Silly -- I'll report back to you my experiences. I'm willing to bet money they won't say a word at the Phx airport but they'll want to play 20 Questions when we leave Oakland. That's what always happens.
