So I failed the 1 hour glucose test at 28 weeks with a 156 .I started crying in her office because I have this fear that I am going to be passing my family's food/weight issues to my daughter which I promised myself I wouldn't do. I am a nervous wreck about this because I passed with an 83 at week 10. Also, my mom is diabetic and it is something I very much want to avoid in life.
My midwife told me to make a 30 week appointment and to take the 3 hour right before then so they can go over my results with me at that appointment. That is 2 weeks away to know if I have GD!!!
I feel like a sitting duck... not sure if I should start a modified GD diet? If I do go low carb will that throw off my 3 hour results? I was not told to do a modified diet for three days before like others were on here... so I am nervous if I go low carb then my body won't react well to the sugar at the test.
1. Should I ask to take the test sooner a. to know and b. to get started?
2. what ultimately could cause a false positive on that test, since I have heard there are so many?
3. will waiting until 30 weeks to take the test yield higher numbers?
I appreciate all your knowledge and insight.
Re: a million glucose test questions- HELP!
Eating a GD diet will be healthy, whether you have GD or not, so I suggest you start now. Its a healthy way to eat, so it can help you stave off diabetic tendencies in the future as well (NBR).
The test looks at your body's ability to control its sugar levels by producing insulin. This has to do with your specific biological make up and not your current diet, or what you eat before the test. I come from a family of diabetics (both Type 1 and Type 2, adult onset and juvenile) and I passed my test. My mother had GD with me, but not with my 2 sisters. There really aren't any specific risk factors, which is why everyone has to get tested. If there were other indicators, they would probably only test high risk people.
The failed 1 hour tests are not necessarily false positives. The one hour test is merely a benchmark test. They don't want you to have to waste 3 hours of your life if one hour will do. So that means that your body didn't process the sugar well enough in that one hour. Now you get a 3 hour one. Yes, its a pain in the butt (and in the arm), but it gives them a better indication as to the rate that your body produces insulin and can process sugars. Even if you eat before hand, it shouldn't affect your results. Some of us had to fast before the 1 hour and some didn't, and I don't think it affects the results at all.
So yes, if the GD diet is healthier than your normal eating habits (not just low carb, but healthier overall) then use those guidleines to help you have a healthy pregnancy. Then, if you do happen to have GD, you are already used to the diet. It can't hurt.
waiting till 30 weeks should have no bearing on your "score."
i have never had a false positive but i failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour and my number wa shigher than yours.
if your midwife thinks waiting till 30 weeks is acceptable than trust her expertise.
i understand 200% how you feel. i know this is easier said than done but try not to stress. worrying up till the minute you take the test wont change the results and will only cause stress for you and baby.
Thank you.. that was very helpful
First off, I got a 160 on my 1-hour and I passed my 3-hour with flying colors. Also, my levels were 77 at 12 weeks, it's natural for that level to rise from the beginning of pregnancy and now. It's just part of being pregnant. For some women it raises too much.
Taking the test now versus in a couple weeks shouldn't really make a difference. I heard that I failed the test the day I turned 28 weeks, a Friday, and they told me to go ahead and take it right away on Monday.
Don't stress, that is one thing that can effect your numbers. But really if you have GD, you have it. You'll be fine either way. My sister had it really bad, she failed her 1-hour so bad, over 200, that they didn't even bother with the 3-hour for her. She and both of her babies are perfectly healthy and she does not have diabetes now post pregnancy.
I don't have any real advice to give, except to say that I'm in the same boat.. I have diabetes on one side of my family and I've always actually had very low blood sugar (to the point of fainting a few times in high school/ college when going too long without refueling myself), but I got a 176 on my one hour. I was really upset & hormonally spazzed a bit because this was the 3rd blood sugar test I've had during pregnancy, not to mention countless other vampiric blood drawings, and the first one I've failed.. I told DH I feel like they're "wanting me to have GD" because I'm overweight (hence the other tests).
I understand your thoughts/ concerns with passing on family weight issues. On both sides of my family alllll the women and most of the men struggle with being overweight, and DH's family is the same. I am a little torn about having a girl because of this.. I really don't want to see her have the same body image issues as I've had. All I can do is tell her every day how beautiful she is and hope she knows it's 10000% true.
Hang in there Kondasa.. good luck on your test!!
Yes, doing a low carb diet can mess up your result. My doctor put me on high carb diet 3 days before I did the test. I had to eat between 150-200 gr of carb. That way the pancreas is stimulate to the max. I did the test this morning and will have the result tomorrow. Just curious why you don't go ahead and do the test as soon as you can? Try not to worry so much, with dd I failed the 1 hour test and passed the 3 hours.
I'm sorry, but this is not true. The lab tech watched me like a hawk to make sure I didn't have any water after drinking the glucola, save for a little swig right after to rinse out my mouth.
I wasn't allowed to drink water either, or walk around at all. I failed my 1 hr with a 205, and was diagnosed with GD at that point.
