Food Allergy

New Vegan Deli and Bakery!

I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!! A new vegan deli and bakery is opening not far from us. I am so happy. I spoke with the owner who has 4 children with allergies, and she was so frustrated in the lack of bakeries that could accomodate her children's needs, that she went to culinary school and opened a bakery that specializes in vegan birthday cakes and party foods! I will be ordering my son's birthday cake from her when the time comes! The cakes are so beautifully decorated. I have not tasted them, but I plan to do so. I guess it was silly, but not having a cake for my son's first birthday was really bothering me. I am not handy in the kitchen and a homemade cake would not have been the same. I am still learning about alternatives to eggs and milk. He is just 7 months, so I have time until he is eating solid food.

Wow, the owner stated that they work really hard to try and not cross contaminate, and they cater to your needs. I am sure she understands the importance of this, because of her children's allergies. So, Madusia, your son is also allergic to soy? My son had a mild non reactive response to soy, but milk, eggs and peanuts were off the charts. So, all the commercial bakeries and even Whole Foods told me that they could not make his cake and insure that eggs or milk would not be used or come in contact with it. I just didn't want to take a chance.

yes.. i ended up making the cherrybrook cake which is soy/milk/egg/nut free and no cross contamination  and it was as good as a allergy free cake will get.  I sued the soy/dairy free butter and it was actually pretty good.  You can also add some "SO DELICIOUS" yogurt to your cake recipe and it will be ridiculously moist.

  • We have a gluten free / dairy free / soy free bakery near us. They also have a lot of vegan items. Even with all the different allergies in our house there is always something for us there. They save me often when I need safe foods for school or parties. They are so careful about cross contamination, she gets it as she has a son with ASD. It's funny bc she doesn't have a sign on the door about being allergy friendly and I think most of her customers don't even realize it's not a "normal" selection. They all still love it though, ha!

I will definitely try the yogurt in the cake batter for goodies I make during the holiday.
