November 2011 Moms

My boy name is being spoiled for me!

We want to use the first initial "S" for a baby name, to honor DH's grandmother Sara.  (Jewish Tradition)

We like one S boy name - Spencer.  I associate it with Lady Diana (Spencer) and I think the nicknam "Spence" is pretty cool.

EXCEPT, I was just at the movies, and there was some commercial that was spoofing reality TV peeps and the male character was SPENCER.  Ouch.  And it got me thinking that Spencer, thanks to Speidi, is kind of a go to reality DB name.

Sigh.  Am I being silly?  I know all names have lots of associations.  I just HATE freaking reality TV nonsense and Spencer Pratt was just a special tool!

  • i think Spencer is a super cute boys name!! and i think the whole Spedi thing is over at this point. i think it'd be safe to use.

  • I see your point, however, Spencer is a great name and though I think you will have a few people that associate that name with "Speidy" (so stupid), I wouldn't let it deter you from using it!

  • I would use it who cares about spencer pratt, the only tv character I know with the name spencer is the brother on icarly (my dd loves that show)

I pretty much agree with this.  I love the name!

  • I can understand how you feel, but once your baby comes it will be a whole different story. Right now when we talk about names, we all think of people we know with those names, but when it comes down to it, you'll associate the baby's name with your baby. If you think about it, there are probably enough idiots out there to rule out almost every name! Don't let some moron attention whore take away from your favorite name!!!
  • I actually love Spencer as a name and thikn it will be making a comeback despite belonging to one of the biggest douchebags in reality TV...just don't let your kid wear Ed Hardy and you should be OK.

  • I love the name spencer!  Don't let that MTV DB ruin it for you!  If you hadn't brought him up in your post I wouldn't have thought of him, so I think you are probably safe. :)

  • Aww, I think Spencer is so great. It actually always makes me think of one of my fav movies, "As Good As It Gets' and Helen Hunt's sons name is Spencer and she always calls him 'Spence'. I'm into the reality TV stuff and it didn't even occur to me until you mentioned Speidi (who are both just ridiculous). Stick with what you love. :)

  • I definitely wouldn't let that stop you from using hte name.  If you had just said "Spencer Pratt" I would have had no idea who you were talking about.  I have a vague idea of the "Speidi" reference, but would not have ever put two and two together with that and your chosen baby name if you had not mentioned it.

    I agree!

  • Speidi is so over. So so over, thank goodness! I think you are safe using the name.  Plus, it's a great name, don't let those d-bags ruin it for you.

  • I love the name Spencer.  I think you should still use it.  I would, but MH is way into using "family" names for boys.

  • I grew up with a Spencer and he is a great guy, so I like the name. Also, those AWs will be old news by the time your kid is in school and growing up. No one will even remember them.

Honestly, that Spencer never popped into my head until you mentioned it.  And I am ashamed to admit that I was addicted to the Hills.  lol  I think you're all set.

  • I highly doubt Spencer Pratt will be doing something newsworthy for the next 20 odd years, he's not that 'gifted.'  If you like the name use it if it suits you!

My mother begged me not to name my son Charles (Charlie) b/c she knew a pedophile growing up by that name.  Guess what, I stilled named him that because DH and I could only agree on that name and I love it.  Every name is going to have positive and negative associations.

  • My FI is a Spencer so I'm partial to the name Wink I joke about the Speidi association to him sometimes, but I like the name so I never really think of the bad stigmas. Spencer from The Hills will be irrelevant in a couple of years anyway (well, he already is, but even more so) and I doubt anyone will think of the association soon. I think you should go with it!
  • I totally forgot about Spencer Pratt, and I'm sure many people have.  It's a great name!!!!!

  • I apparently live under a rock; I have no idea who the reality TV Spencer is. :) I think it's a great name!

Thanks y'all.  I had dismissed the Spencer Pratt thing too, until I saw that damn commercial!  It was a spoof and the perfect reality DB name was, of course, Spencer, and that's when it hit the pit of my stomach.

But I realize that's a bit silly.  Thanks!

  • I have an awesome student right now named Spencer.  I've never associated him/his name with Spencer Pratt.  I just never even thought about it.
