Does anybody drive a Ford Escape? Also I'd like your opinion on options.

I'm looking to trade my SUV and I have been looking at the Escape. Does anybody have anything to say about them? Good or bad?

I'm wanting to trade my SUV in because the gas is killing me. When I bought my SUV our Trailblazer engine was about to go so I didn't have much choice. I literally had to pick something on the lot and there wasn't much choice. We didn't think the Trailblazer would make it home. I love my Jeep Comander but since I now drive 50miles round trip I need something that's better on gas. I am currently filling up 2x a week at 70$ each time so you can see why I'm hurting.

I've gotten some good reviews about it but I'd always like to hear more.

Also, what would be more important to you...a bigger engine (no real gas difference) or leather. I'm trying to decide between the 4cyl and leather or the 6cyl and cloth. I'm fine with either cloth or leather but I think cleaning up after toddler spills might be easier with leather. Let's assume price would be the same for either.

I drive a Mazda tribute (built at ford plant, same body/ engine) and love it. Not too big, but plenty of room. We have two RF carseats in the backseat and still room in the floor and enough that J can push his seat all the way back (he's 6'3") I know that's not what you asked. :) I get 20-22mpg highway most days with the small 6 cyl. I also have cloth seats. They haven't been too bad to clean. Honestly, leather isn't my thing. After two Texas summers with a car with leather seats, I prefer cloth now. Just my preference. :)

  • I don't have an Escape, but I am car shopping and geeking out on this kind of thing right now.

That is actually a really tough choice!  Leather is so much easier to keep clean, but its SO SO nice to have the 6cyl engine power. I'd test drive both and see if there is that big of a difference in the horsepower and "feel" when you are initially accellerating.

If you're keeping gas milage in mind, the 4cyl will do much better.. so if that is a primary concern, I'd go for that with the leather.

What car are you looking at? I'm open to options but gas mileage is important.

  • I would go with the 4cyl and leather. You will get better gas mileage and I wouldn't trade my easily cleaned leather seats!
  • I don't have an Escape but I have a Honda CR-V.  It gets about 270 miles per tank of gas and the last time I filled up it came out to $49 but DH insists I use super unleaded instead of regular so that number could go down.  No idea why but whatever.  I think I'd go with a 6 cylinder because you just never know when you'll need a little extra oomph to get out of a sticky situation and sometimes even with my foot to the floor it's hard for my car to get any speed to pass anything.  Also, I would not want leather seats during the Texas summer.

I don't have the ford escape but I have a Mercury Mariner which is practically the same vehicle on the outside and I love, love love it.  My favorite thing that Ford does is the microsoft sync.  You can sync up your phone to your car so that your phone plays through the speakers making it hands free.  Love it.  DH just said mine is a 4 cylinder but I have plenty of get up and go and get good gas mileage (about 25 hwy miles to the gallon).  So I would go with the leather.  I don't have leather and wish I did!
