s/o What IS baby led weaning? (and why?)

I see this a lot on the breastfeeding and attachment parenting boards.

So a) What is it? and b) Why would you do it?  Just curious :)

Re: s/o What IS baby led weaning? (and why?)

  • Its starting with regular table foods instead of purees.  The idea (I think) is that purees don't teach a baby how to eat.  Babies don't necessarily need the calories so they aren't harmed by playing with the food (which is what happens at first) more than eating it.  I've read on message boards that babies that were BLW'd enjoy a wider variety of foods, can feed themselves earlier, and are more apt to try new foods than a baby who was started on purees.

Its a Euro trend, and the "weaning" doesn't mean weaning off the breast, it means starting solids, which is how the word is used in England.

  • With Abby, it pissed me the eff off to go through the trouble of making organic purees only to have her spit it out at me. Like deeply angered me in a way I'm not proud of. She didn't like being fed with a spoon and didn't want smooth muck. Once she was more on finger foods, our relationship became a lot less stressful.

When I first did BLW with Emily, I'll admit the mess got on my nerves :) but it was tons more enjoyable overall. Sitting with a tiny bowl of cereal and a spoon becomes less practical once you have two little ones to contend with anyway. She LOVED being able to just shove food in her mouth when she was ready instead of waiting for that tasty bite of food lingering on a spoon but mommy is distracted by Abby pouring her milk all over the floor. =)
