Thoughts on this-moving the freezer

I have an exta freezer for all my freezer cooking and meats that I have stocked up on. DH doesn't want to take anything out of it during the move. He said he will just load up the freezer with the items in it and let it be the last thing that get loaded in the moving truck and the first thing to bring out and hook up so that the items will stay frozen. We are moving about 40 miles away.

Do you think this plan would work out? I am back on forth on this idea.

I would think that as long as you keep the door shut tight that it should be fine but it will be super heavy.

  • I think you will be fine.  Our power was out about a month ago for 4 days, it was pretty warm out, I put dry ice in there and the solid things, like whole chickens and casseroles stayed fine for the 4 days.  The only things that I was not sure about where small things, like shredded meat.  I think for 4 or 5 hours, you would have no issues, even without adding dry ice.
  • It will work fine. My local farmers move their freezers farther than that every week to get to market. Nothing ever gets thawed, so you will be fine.
  • I agree, we've had power out longer than that, and it's been fine.  Just as PP said, though, don't open it- not even to peek :)
