Cold medicine at 28 months?

My son has a pretty bad cold (cough and runny nose).  I don't think it is anything more serious because he is in good spirits and doesn't have a fever.  The cough gets worse at night.  I was going to give him children's benedryl until I read it is not for children under 4.  Is there anything, other than motrin or tylenol, I can give my little man to make him feel better.

Re: Cold medicine at 28 months?

  • I found some "natural" cough medicine at Walgreens that worked really well. It is safe for kids 2 and up.

  • not really, they took all that stuff off the shelves a few years ago.  however, i've heard honey can help ease cough and sore throat.

  • I am in the same boat my friend. We had been using honey drops (not sure if you can get them outside of Canada) up until last night when we had to call up the family doc because the coughing was causing her to lose even more sleep than her sleep apnea alone. That said we gave her one Triaminic soft melt and some tylenol and she at least got some sleep. But I would be cautious of using any cough/ cold remedy without a doctors consultation other than honey and lemon.

  • I've also used the "natural" stuff pp posted about from Walgreens. It's worked great for coughs.

  • "Natural" homeopathic stuff hasn't been tested by the FDA. You are taking a chance by using that stuff. The FDA is the group that pulled the children's meds off shelves.

We use honey, Tylenol, a humidifier, extra pillows and fluids. There really isn't much you can do. But in a few days your LO will be better with or without meds.

  • At DS's 3 year check-up, I asked our pedi about some type of medicine I could give him because of his continuous cough--would keep both of us up throughout the night.

Like pp said, she noted that the stores don't carry anything for their young age, but she recommended 1 teaspoon of Childrens Triaminic only before bedtime. It has helped, too. I'll also give DS some Childrens Benadryl when his nose is like a faucet. Again, 1 teaspoon.

    Hope this helps!!

P.S. Here is the Dr. Sears link regarding Benadryl dosage. https://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t088800.asp

  • DD had a bad cough a few weeks ago and her pedi. said it was okay to give her Delsym 1/2tsp every 12hrs.  We only gave it at night and it did seem to help.

  • Little Remedies has a honey cough syrup (non-medicated) for toddlers that worked great for us when older DD had a dry cough at night during her last cold.  I found it at Target.
  • DS pedi said it was okay to give a tiny amount of cold medicine if absolutely necessary. I usually give him 1/2 tsp at night only if his symptoms are so bad that he can't sleep (coughing all night, etc). Otherwise, I don't chance it.

  • I got permission from my pedi to use Benadryl sparingly when DS was 5 months old.  At 2, we use 1/2 teaspoon when needed.
