Baby Names

What do you think of Grover?

Other than the fact it is a Sesame Street character (but so are Oscar and Zoe and they are popularish names..) I do love the name though, what do you all think?

Re: What do you think of Grover?

  • Like you said, Sesame Street. And Grover Cleveland. It's not a name I would give a baby, at least not for a first name. I could see a lot of teasing happening with Grover because of the Sesame Street association.

  • Super hate it! It will always be Sesame Street, It's like naming your kid "Cookie Monster". Oscar is terrible too. I think it sound's like a dog's name, not fit for a person.

I feel like Oscar has more references other than just Sesame Street (Oscar and Felix, Oscar Meyer weiners, Oscar Wilde, etc.) though there is still going to be teasing. Zoe is a new invention and is a much more strongly established independent name (I mean, "Maria" was a character on Sesame Street, too).

Grover, however, almost entirely denotes the muppet. It's like naming your kid Kermit or Elmo. I wouldn't do it.

  • hahahaha this is not a dog we are naming here

  • I honestly think a child named Grover would be picked on to no end...
  • I actually didn't think Sesame Street at all; my first thought was Grover Cleveland. It's a decent name, but NMS. I do think that the under 5 set will be quick to notice the Sesame Street reference though.

  • I wouldn't name my kid Grover like I wouldn't name my kid Elmo or Oscar. I'm sure Zoe isn't a problem as it is not a popular character.

I think there is too much association with Sesame Street.  Same issue with Elmo and Oscar.
  • I, personally, like Grover. We don't have a TV though, so I don't see Sesame Street all the time or anything. I know the character from my childhood...but don't really think that has an effect on my opinion of the name.

Definitely lovable, furry old Grover. My second thought is Grover Dill from A Christmas Story.

Associations aside, it really is such a stodgy, clumsy name to give to someone.

  • It's one of my guilty pleasure names. I think it's cool, but I can see the teasing potential.

The thing with Sesame Street/Muppets is that many real, legit names were picked for characters. Those names are now forever associated with furry monsters. Though you can probably still get away with naming your child Zoe, Abby, Sam, etc., the clunkier, more iconic names like Elmo, Grover, and Kermit are much more daring. I still think they could be cool on the right kid, but that's not the most solid reason to use a name.

  • It is a family name in my family (as in my dad and brother have the name) and while my dad is too old to have been little during SS my brother never really got picked on because of it. Saying that I am pretty sure he hates his name, but he is the 3rd. He tried to go by a different name when he was younger but that lasted like 2 days.

  • This one is more Sesame Street than the others you listed. Oscar has other connections in my mind but Grover is just 100 percent the show for me. I can't say whether I like it or not because I can't get past that!

  • Thanks so much for all your replies and opinions..

I still like the name, I think it is strong and a little bit funky (and like a PP said is a real name which is nice)..... BUT

I won't be calling my baby Grover. We have been divided because of the Sesame street association and like another PP said, so many of those names have become solely associated with Sesame Street. Our kid has to live in the world I guess.

What about the name Grosvenor? It's similar, but without the Sesame Street association... It has a silent S, so it sounds more like grove-ner, I think.
