Soothie...a possible choking hazard?

So my daughter earlier today during lunch was sitting in her car seat sucking on her soothie. Well she has learned to pull it out and put it back in. Only this time she pulled it out and started biting the edge and sucking on the edge. At the time i didnt think anythng of it til i looked at her and she had the WHOLE thing in her mouth! She wasn't choking on it but was struggling to get it out. So i pulled it out and havent given it back to her yet. She cried all the way home from my moms house because i wouldn't give it to her. Im kinda freaked and thank God i was right there when it happened. So my question to you is have any of your LOs done this? I think its time for us to maybe try another brand...one she cant stuff in her mouth.

Hmm weird. My first LO didnt use a pacifier so this is all new to me. And it just really scared me.

  • My LO one loves pacis, but he never liked the soothie one from the hospital for some reason.  Anyway, he does the same thing plays with it and then sucks on the edges, but he can't put his in his mouth fully because it's kind of bigger and doesn't flex.  If you get the one that is hard plastic ones like the brand gerber where it's round they can't put it fully in their mouth and it has the same round nipple like the soothie one. It might work better for you.  Plus it has a thing where your LO can hold the end of it too.

  • Maybe it's time to move up to the next size? I know most brands make bigger pacis for when they "outgrow" the smaller sizes.

  • I posted about this happening to my son not long ago. He woke up from a nap and jammed the thing in his mouth and started gagging. I'm curious though, is your soothie completely round or does it have the nose cut outs? The one my son choked on had the nose cut outs and since then I won't give him those. I don't think he can get the round ones in his mouth like that and I hope that's not a wrong assumption! FWIW, this never happened with my DD.

  • Hmm we never tried those ones.. we had the nuk ones and DS used to L O V E them, but now he will only take the avent ones, which IMO is okay cuz they have the cute little animals on the front lolol

As for the question at hand.. I dunno if it was me even if my son screamed I wouldn't give him it back ever probably. There's just too many instances where you are not looking at them constantly and boom choking you know? Maybe I am a little too "overreactive" about stuff like this. The old saying isn't wrong, better safe then sorry.

  • I don't think that it's really a choking hazard. Even if LO gets the whole thing in her mouth, it's not going to fit in her windpipe. It might make her uncomfortable or gag.

  • My pacifiers say that they may become lodged in the mouth but can be removed gently and pose no choking hazard.
