On Tuesday, I took off work to go to my dr's appt. I left an hour early, just not feeling being at work, came home and packed up all my toiletries in our hospital bag, added baby mittens etc just in case. At the appt the week before I was 2-3 cm dilated and 50% effaced. Everybody said I could go for weeks like that, so I was trying not to get too excited about it. I drove us the 1.5 hours to the city where the hospital is and we had a nice leisurely lunch. We stopped at the grocery store and the mall, and finally it was time for my appt at 3:20.
I check in at front desk and we wait probably 40 minutes before I get called back. I could tell I was a little dehydrated from my urine sample and got a lecture about that, I guess I was losing keytones (sp?) or something. Then dr did an internal. She asked how I was feeling, any pain. I said some lower back, I hadn't even taken a tylenol or anything. She tells me I'm in latent labor, and I ask what that is. She says that I need to go to the hospital, I'm 5-6 cm dilated and 70% effaced. We go to hospital, luckily DH has a job where he can go with me to every visit. They hook me up to start monitoring me and tell me they will make a decision about whether to keep me within an hour, but after they started checking me, they told me we were having the baby tonight or tomorrow. Things started to happen very quickly then. They asked me if baby's head was down, and I said I don't know, we haven't had an ultrasound since 20 weeks. I was finally able to tell I was having a contraction by watching the monitor and noticing that my back did hurt a little bit more when the line was higher. I was checked into hospital around 5:30 and had Lilah at 10:57 pm. I had to make a decision about the epidural really fast because I was dilating so quickly and my waters were bulging. I took it, and my labor was not like labor at all. They broke my waters about an hour later. I pushed for less than 30 minutes. My dr was not on call, but she made it just in time to deliver our little girl. I had to stop pushing during 2 contractions to wait for her, and baby was born the next contraction. She was 3 weeks and a day early. She weighes 5 lbs 7 oz.
I thank God that I had a dr's appt that day or who knows where I would have had my baby. I don't know when I would have realized or if I would have realized I was in labor and if we had gotten in the car and tried to make it the 1.5 hours. I just feel so blessed. Lilah is a little jaundiced now and is on a billiblanket (sp?). I hope she can get off of it tomorrow.
I wish all the other June mommies luck. I can't even describe how much love I feel for my little girl. She is definitely the light of my life! If I can figure out how to post a picture I will. DH is totally smitten, every time she squeeks he is over there loving on her.
Re: I didn't know I was in labor......
wow! Crazy story...what a good bit of luck to have already been at the hospital!!!
Congratulations.
Congrats on your LO!
Sounds like you had a really easy labor...so easy you didn't have a clue. I have a feeling I'm going to start wondering about every little pain now! I deffinatly want an easy labor but to just think I'm having a little bit of back pain would be crazy! I'm glad everything went smoothly for you!
