My niece loves art stuff. You could put together a basket with art supplies. Or Crayola makes these dry erase letter, number boards to help teach the alphabet and numbers.

My 3 year old loves any type of truck - Tonka has a line that lights up and makes noises and there is a firetruck, ambulance, garbage truck, dump truck, and a wrecker truck. He loves them. He also got a really cool guitar for his birthday that has 4 buttons and then a "laser" thing that when you run your fingers through it it makes the guitar noises (I think my friend got it at Toys R Us).
I would think you couldn't go wrong with some kind of truck.
My nephew just turned 5 but he has been all about trucks for quite a while now. I think this time of year outdoor activities are pretty popular. Last year I got him a cool sprinkler thing that was a hit (just remember NO crayola colored bubbles).
My 3-yr old nephew is really into the Thomas the Train stuff, he loves the bubble lawnmower and this Elefun game . He also spends a lot of time playing with his plastic dinosaur and animal toys.
