Working Moms

If you have hired a nanny for the summer, come in...

What are some of the terms that you use for yours? I know this is an open-ended question and can be negotiated with some other terms. But I am curious to hear what other moms use. For example, since the employment is only for 12-weeks, how many vacation or sick days do you give them? I get zero sick days from work, and 15 vacation days myself (but this was accrued, meaning that I have that due to the length of service that I have been with the company). So I am having a hard time figuring this out. Also, do I provide meals for them as well (breakfast and lunch included) as a part of the pay? TIA!

Re: If you have hired a nanny for the summer, come in...

  • I've nannied for several families during the summer.  It definitely depended on the family and what they were comfortable with.

Some familes have a lot of flexibility so I was asked if I would be needing time off for things like July 4th.  We also worked around any vacations that they had planned.

Since it was such a short period of time, I did not have any paid time off or sick days.  If they were gone over the course of the summer I was not paid either.  It was something that I knew about going into the job and it was my choice if I wanted to take it knowing that there would be a week in there that I had off, but was not paid.

Other things that were taken into consideration were summer activities such as going to the pool.  All of my employers paid for a my pool pass if I was going to be taking the kids.   They also gave me some "fun" money for each week that was spent on things like snacks at the pool, or a trip to Cold Stone.  I had 3 families that provided me a vehicle and other families that paid me $0.50/mile for me to use my own vehicle.

I always ate breakfast at home and lunch at their place.  I just ate what the kids did and if I wanted something else I brought it myself.  They did always ask if there were certain things that I would like to have in the house, but I never said anything because I'm not really picky.

I'm not sure where you are located in Iowa, but in the Des Moines Metro area I was paid between $9-11/hour prior to 2006.  This was as a college student, if you are willing to hire a high school student you could probably get away with $8/hour.

We hired a grad student 4 days/week for 7 weeks at $13/hr. Basically we wrote in the contract that she could eat our food for meals (but she brought her own anyway.) Also since it was such a short period of time, we did not have sick or vacation day accural. GL!

  • When I've nannied in the summer there were no paid days off. There were sometimes spontaneous or planned days off but I didn't get paid. I always ate what the kids ate and they would give us enough money for me to eat as well if we were eating at the pool or something.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Our subdivision has a private pool; and I will give her access to it so she can take my daughter there (she is only 10.5 months old right now). I do have a week off that I will be going on a vacation; and I was wondering about whether to pay her or not that week, so that's good to know!

Did you guys all pay them under the table or did you claim it?

  • It was about half and half as far as whether they paid under the table or claimed it.  Both worked fine because I never really made enough to have it effect my taxes one way or the other.  The only thing that is important to remember is if you plan to claim it on your taxes then you need to pay her taxes and have it recorded.  You will also need to get her a W-2 in Jan.  I have several employers who totally forgot about that part until I called.
