I use Mabel's labels and like them a lot. They stick very well and are fine if you use a dishwasher. Ours stayed on for over a year with no problems. I was also able to peal them off when I wanted to have DS2's name on some of DS1's bottles and that was pretty easy. We take whole milk for DS1 and we use a label maker to add the date since we change that every week.
We use vinyl name stickers too, ours are from Stuck on You. They have held up for more than a year through many dishwasher cycles, and come off easy when you finally want them off. I use them on cups, Tupperware, sunscreen, etc.

For more permanent things (bottles, containers for food) I have 'NameBubbles' from namebubbles.com; basically the same concept as the other posters. FWIW they have a package geared towards daycare/school and I've barely used the package so far, so it will be helpful for several years.

I also used labels from Etsy (can't remember the vendor) and they worked great. For the date, I would use blue painters tape and a sharpie- the painters tape didn't leave any residue on the bottles.

They stick on and stay on through washing, dishwasher and it takes a lot for my toddler to peel them off... much better than a sharpie and if you have another child later on you can take these labels off and put on the new one's.
we used inchbug back in the day when we brought bottles too. now I use them if we go on playdates & stuff b/c sometimes other ppl have hte same straw or sippie cups.
We've used Mabel's Labels for everything and Inch Bug labels for cups/bottles. They have held up well for 3+ years with hundreds of boiling water washings. Good investment! Look for online coupons.

I initially used mabels labels, which lasted almost 3 yrs. But when I ran out I actually searched it on ebay and found 160 mini labels for around $5-6. They are just as good. and maybe 1/4 if not less the price.

I have "Brother" labeler like this:

This and a Sharpie Fabric pen works great for everything.
We use inchbug too. Love the plastic orbit labels.
