Baby Names

Is this name too masculine??

We have narrowed down our list of girl's names and one of the names we are considering is RILEY ELIZABETH. I have a very Irish last night so I thought Riley would go well with it. The only thing I am debating...is Riley sound too masculine for a girl?

Re: Is this name too masculine??

  • Riley is traditionally a boy's name. However, and unfortunately, it has gone to the girls. Use it if you like it!

  • Ive met just as many Riley girls as I have boys and I think its pretty cute for a girl. I think it sounds feminine to begin with personally

  • Yeah, I've only known male Riley's. How about Maeve Elizabeth?
  • I still think it is a dog name
  • My 2 year old nephew is named Riley, so yes, I think it's too masculine a name for a girl.

Agreed. (My name is also very popular among dogs, and it's never all that flattering when you meet someone who knows a Siberian Husky with the same moniker.)

  • I find it masculine yes. I see it as a boy's name or a surname.

  • I've only known girls with the name Riley. I guess it's the area. I was gonna say that it sounded fine to me. You might want to check it for popularity in your area.

  • My niece is Rylee (this is not an attempt to recommend a 'feminine' spelling) Eve, and yes it can go either way. When I hear the name I do not know whether to expect a boy or girl though.

  • I think of it as a boy's name. What about Bridget or Maeve? Those are lovely and still strong and spunky.

  • I know of 3 Riley's (not sure if they are spelled that way) and they are all girls. I don't know of any boys.  It just must be the area.  I would check the SS website for the state listing b/c I'm willing to bet it's a pretty popular girl's name here.

  • I think it's beautiful and feminine-sounding AND I used to date a Reilly.  The girl spelling is Riley and the boy spelling is Reilly.
  • Yes it is-I think Riley should stay with the boys!  Love Elizabeth though :)

  • I've actually never known a male Riley but I knew a girl named Riley in high school that was absolutely gorgeous (and brilliant)... I sort of had a non-sexual girl-crush on her, haha. So, when I hear "Riley" for a girl I think of her and immediately like the name. Funny how relative names are.

  • I think so because Riley isn't really even gender neutral - it's a boy name. I love Elizabeth though!

I agree with this. Names ending in 'y' or the 'E' sound never struck me as very masculine.

  • I think Riley is a boy's name. The little boy next door to me is named Riley.

  • I dont know any Riley's - male or female. But I do love the name for a girl! And it seems like I'm in the minority, but it just sounds more feminine to me.
