Baby Names

Help me again, pretty please? Phillippa

So I posted a while back about the name Ruby and got some great feedback. And I thought we were pretty much decided on the name... but now I've heard another one I LOVE so I'm not so sure.

WDYT of Phillippa? I have always thought the name Pippa was cute, but I don't like it as a standalone name, hubby didn't care for Piper (which was on my long list), and I had never heard of Phillippa, so it was not considered. But I think Phillippa nn Pippa fits perfectly with our "style"... we usually like classic/old-fashioned/very feminine sounding names that are also underused and spunky. A tall order!

Probably the best part for me is that DH's name is Phillip. I wanted to name our son after him, but he nixed that idea since it's a family tradition and he hates most of his family (his brother is an eighth). But it's not as often a girl is named after her dad.

And yes, I did first hear Phillippa in a magazine article about Pippa Middleton! Not gonna lie. But out where we live in SoCal, there was not a huge craze about the royal wedding and no one I know (myself included) even watched the whole thing. But I hate trendy and overused... do you think Pippa is going to absolutely blow up now?

Her full name would be Phillippa Joy. Joy is my mom's name and non-negotiable. Last name is two syllables, last syllable same as "Malone" (and same number of letters).

Sorry for the long post... naming this girl is so much harder than naming her brother it seems. We don't like a lot of boys names :) TIA!

  • I think that people will think of Pippa Middleton for the next few months, and then she'll drop off the media/entertainment radar.

I think it's a great name and obviously not common, but still a classic.

I think people will ask you if you got the name from Pippa Middleton, which you did.  But it isn't like you are naming her that because you are obsessed, so I think it is a pretty simple answer to say "yes, we liked the name when we heard it".  I don't think that will be a forever issue, as Pippa Middleton won't probably be in the news as much as she is right this moment.  Even in a few months it will die down.

I think it is a cute name.

  • It's a pretty name, but I think the combination of Ruby Joy sounds better. I personally don't equate Pippa with being a nickname for Phillippa. I'd think that Filly would end up being a nn.
  • Love it! My husband is Phil (Philip) and DS1 is Philip so Philippa would obviously be overkill for us. I like the connection to your husband's name too but I will probably be in the minority. I'm sure we'll be hearing it more and more because of Philippa Middleton but it'll be far from a top ten name.

  • I love it as a way to honor DH. I saw an old-timey movie once where the father's name was Phillip and his daughter's name was Phillippa. They called her Flip. Smile
  • Philippa is a guilty pleasure name for me that I would LOVE to use but can't due to a last name that already starts with Ph. I personally love the fact that it mirrors your dh's name. And the nn Pippa is the most common nn for this name and is totally adorable. I think it will trend up some in the US but not explode as I think it will appeal only to certain naming styles and tastes. I say go for it.

    This.

And I don't think people will ask if you're naming her after P.M.

  • NMS...when I see that name it looks like a boy name...like Philip...I also hate the double P...It just looks like a strange name to give a California girl..its looks very foreign (not saying that thats bad), but it just seems like  a name that a little girl would feel "left out' for having.
  • Go for it!  Cute name.

I love it.  And who cares if people think that you named her for Pippa Middleton?  She's pretty damn fabulous. It's not like you're naming her Camilla or anything... Devil
