Breastfeeding

XP: First day at work and ebf baby won't take bottle :(

-->

So its my first day back at work and my husband is home with LO and he keeps calling me saying my DS wont take a bottle and is crying on and off since about noon (its 2:45 now) My heart is breaking!! Does anyone have any advice?

My husband has giving DS bottles in the past, not often but at least 2-3 a week.... He never had a problem before so I never thought I should up the times I give a bottle!!

Any suggestions? Have your LOs refused a bottle when you went back to work? Did they take one the next day?

TIA!

    i don't work but my daughter refused to take a bottle since her 2nd or 3rd time and i had to go and feed her. please try a doidy cup! i know it looks like it would be messy or complicated but it's not at all. they use the same jaw movement as with breastfeeding- my daughter amazed me by picking it up the first time i tried it [i just don't pour much in at a time].

    it's also so much better for the ears and your baby will drink from a cup much sooner. i have seen youtube videos of babies as young as 3 months old drinking from it themselves so your son should pick it up pretty quickly since he'll be using it consistently. it's less than $10 so it's definitely worth trying. they've been used in europe for decades.

    here's the amazon link where you can buy it and here's a blog post i did about them. i really think it will work for him, good luck!

  • My daughter never took to the bottle. Eventually, after three weeks in daycare she managed to take enough sips to hold her over till I came to get her. Fortunately, I only had to go back to work for 3 months.

    They learn to recognize when it's okay to take the bottle because there is no other option, but your DH should be prepared to handle some stress for a couple of days/weeks until baby figures things out.

    I would suggest, if possible, to give him the bottle in a different environment than he's used to being when he's nursing. So say, if he can take him outside, for a little bit of sun; or maybe in another room. That seems to work for some babies.
  • Wow that doidy cup looks so neat.  I'm going to get one, Thanks!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Hopefully today is better! I did get to leave work an hour early to help DH!

    I will definatly look ino that doidy cup...I dont know if my DC will be up for it when he starts in June but at least for home as an alternative to a bottle.

    Thanks again!
