Book recommendation for Big Brother/Sister to be?

-->

I want to purchase a book I can start reading to DD about becoming a big sister and having a baby in the house. Any books you love or would recommend?

Thanks!

Re: Book recommendation for Big Brother/Sister to be?

  • I got DS "I'm a Big Brother" by Joanna Cole.  I like it because we're Team Green and it doesn't refer to the baby as being a boy or girl.

    I also looked at "Best Ever Big Brother" by Karen Katz (DS loves her other books), but it refers to the baby as both "little brother" and "little sister" which I thought would be confusing.

  • For when they are older I would suggest "The Pain and the Great One". In my family it seems like all the kids get along w/ babies but it's when one is a bit older and the youngest is the toddler stage that things get to the "that's no fair" point.

  • My little sister is 11 and has Down's Syndrome. There was really nothing I could find that addressed becoming an Aunt in the way that she would understand. SO! I went to a photo website (shutterfly) and created my own book with pictures of her and my family as well as stock pictures of babies and baby bellies. You should be getting a ton of gift cards from this company in your goodie bags at maternity and baby shops as well as in magazines, so it shouldn't cost you much if anything. You can put your own text in the book as well as adjust the font size and style. I plan on re-making the book for her after Elijah is born so that it contains real pictures of her nephew. My mom LOVES the book and shows it to everyone. That's actually how I told my family that we were pregnant on Christmas Day. I let my sister open her "present" and she just started reading it out loud in front of everyone!

  • I bought "My New Baby" on Amazon and DD LOVES it.  Both the older sibling and younger are of ambiguous gender, so it's reusable for next time (if we have a boy).  It's only $5 on Amazon.  The mom in the book is shown nursing on 2 different pages, which I really wanted as a way to bring up to DD how her brother/sister is going to be eating.  We read it at least once a day and she calls it "Mine New Baby."

    That is a really great idea and such a great story. I have made a photobook before and I agree they are great. I hadn't thought of making a book though.
