Pads v Depends after delivery?

Hi Ladies!  I am visiting from the August 2011 board, so firstly, I want to congratulate all of you on your healthy newborns!!  You must be so thrilled to finally have them in your arms.

I am writing because I was told by one mom to simply buy Depends for after the delivery, rather than wearing the maxi-pads.  Are they necessary?  What would all of you recommend?  Neither sound terribly comfortable, so I could use some sound, practical advice!  Thanks in advance!

i just used overnight pads. i was fine. i did also take a few pair of mesh panties from the hospital - try and grab a few pair. and then after that i had DH run to buy a pack of cheap hanes so the pads would fit well and they would be more comfortable then my lower undies.

  • I hated the thick hospital pads, they leaked everywhere, I only wore them right after I delivered. I bought a pack of Stayfree Ultra Thin Overnight with wings and was much happier and comfortable with those. Yes, I had to change them every hour or two, but I had no leaks and didn't feel like a had 4 inches of pads in my crotch. I also bought some post partum panties from Motherhood Maternity and was very happy I didn't have to use the mesh ones the hospital provided. They felt baggy and just overall terrible. I like the tighter more secure feeling of the MM ones.

I used Depends during the night so I didn't worry about leaking when moving around to feed LO.  I used the pads from the hospital during the day.  I really only needed to use the Depends for the first 5 days or so which means now I have a bag full of unused ones.

  • I wore Depends like underwear with a thin pad inside. Strangely, my hospital didn't have the mesh panties everyone talks about, so Depends it was. I wore them every day until my pack ran out. I loved them lol!!

  • When I was at the hospital I used what they had and when I came home I just used regular pads. My postpartum bleeding was heaviest at the hospital so regular pads were more than adequate after that. Also, the hospital had pads that were basically pads/ice packs that were amazing. I brought a lot of them home, even though I didn't end up using them.

  • I stole the mesh panties and lots of hospital pads. I never leaked out of them. When I ran out of those I used always infinity overnight. Then went to panty liners. Unless you are a really heavy bleeder I can't imagine needing depends.

I used the hospital pads and mesh panties in the hospital and then when I got home I used my bigger maternity panties with Always Infinity Pads. I did have my Depends at the ready but never quite did wind up reaching for them.

THIS for when I got home from hospital. During hospital stay I used the mesh underwear, hospital pads, and ice diapers...ha! Not totally comfortable but did the job!

Agreed! I didn't have a ton of bleeding... I never had any problems with leaking!

This.  LOVE THEM.  I hated the hospital pads and the mesh panties that they gave me.

Bingo. Someone recommended these to me, and I love them. Well, as much as one can love a pad. Some other things you might want to have on hand: stool softener and ibuprofen. The hospital also gave me a little squirt bottle, a can of Dermoplast (spray-on pain relief and antibacterial-- good stuff!), and a jar of Tucks pads (witch hazel, which will help relieve swelling and itching). Good luck!
  • I used the overnight version of the pads i would normally buy for a while, now i'm just using the regular ones.

I am soo jealous! They had these when I had DS and I asked for them this time and they didn't have them anymore.  They were wonderful!

  • My bleeding was at normal period level by the end of the second day and I HATED those giant hospital pads. I wanted thin ones with wings as soon as possible, in fact we stopped on the way home from the hospital to get them. Depends would have made me insane. Would have been great for the first 24 hours though!

I started using these 2 days after we got home. I used the hospital ones and mesh panties for a while. The worked well with the fabulous ice packs too!

  • i used depends.... they are great! I had a c/s so I didn't have to worry about bothering the incision. Also I didn't have to worry about wearing pants the first couple days because the depends cover so much!
