So I went into the dr...

After finding that I was having a clear discharge (and pretty good amount) I was worried about it being my fluid leaking so I called my dr. After going back and forth on whether to go in or not I decided it was better to just know and went on in. He did a test with a paper strip that looked like a ph test...and said that if the strip turned blue it would suggest it was leaking fluid...it turned blue. So after freaking out for a couple minutes while waiting for him to go look at it under the microscope (I was by myself, my husband was at work) he returned and said that although it turned blue, it didnt have the pattern that leaking fluid usually does under the microscope and it also wasn't "pooling at my cervix" so it probably wasnt leaking fluid.

So Im supposed to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or anything let him know. He also checked me and Im 1cm dialated and 50% effaced. He also went ahead and did my group b strep test which, for those of you worried, was super quick and easy.

My appt almost made me feel just as unsure as before I went in, but im sure he wouldnt have just sent me home if he were concerned. Anyone else have a similar situation happen???

Re: So I went into the dr...

  • This exactly happened to my SIL, except they kept her at the hospital and did a bunch of tests and had her all freaked out that baby would need steroid shots to develop her lungs (she was 36 wks at that point).  After a bunch of tests and SIL completely stressing out, it turned out she wasn't leaking fluid after all.

I think your doctor's more conservative approach sounds a lot less stressful for you :)

  • Im really glad he didnt make me go through that! Especially since 1.) Im only 35 weeks and really hoping she stays in at least a couple weeks longer! And  2.)  all I kept thinking was "I need to go home and clean and pack my hospital bag." haha!

The only thing that confused me was when he said it "probably" wasnt leaking fluid. Probably? How reassuring...lol

  • Sounds a bit scary!

    so what are you leaking?

That's probably "CYA" because he doesn't want to be sued on the tiny chance he's wrong. It is unfortunate but our medical-legal system has forced doctors to have to protect themselves like this :(  Don't let that stress you out though.

  • glad your Dr. decided it was not AF and you LO can cook longer. Take it easy for the rest of the day if you can.

He said sometimes discharge can have whatever it is that makes the strip turn blue in it... it just isn't usual.

To be honest I DONT KNOW. haha. I wish i would've asked more questions but I was so relieved that I wasn't headed to L&D at the time that I didn't think to.

  • Thats great that the doctor did not think you were leaking fluid. Just keep an eye on it and take it easy.

  • Well even if you may be leaking fluid - it doesn't seem to be enough to cause a concern which is a good thing! Just continue to check and try to relax! I would definately get that bag packed though.. just in case.. lol
