Attachment Parenting

too late to start baby wearing?

My baby is 3 months old.  He is what Dr. Sears would call a "high need" baby.  I tried wearing him in a bjorn when he was younger but he hated it!  I recently got a moby wrap and while he likes it better he still fusses after 10-15 minutes in it.  Is it too late?

FYI: i just found out about "attachment parenting" and feel so much better!  My friends and family have made me feel bad for holding and rocking my baby and not letting him cry in his crib.  Any newcomer advice is appreciated.

Heck no it's not too late ;-)

It's normal for babies to fuss a bit when they first get in a carrier especially when it's a new thing - after all, you are probably putting him in fussy so it's going to take him a while to realize that he's in a cozy place and settle down. Try moving around if you aren't already - bouncing on an exercise ball works wonders.

My siggy link has more info on wearing if you are interested.

  • You're definitely not too late!  I got my Moby when I was pregnant, but wasn't brave enough to try it out with E until he was about 2 months old (I hadn't found this wonderfully supportive community yet!).

I would definitely agree with pp - try switching positions.  How are you wrapping?  If you do a hug hold, your LO may be happier than if you do a cradle hold.  It can be tricky to position the baby properly in the cradle hold so that the airway remains open.  I never used a cradle hold for safety reasons.  That isn't to say that it can't be done safely, I just preferred the tummy to tummy position better.

Also, the if your babe seems uncomfortable, consider the temperature.  The Moby can be hot, so if you're outside & it's warm, consider just a diaper or a shot sleeved onesie.  Between your body heat & the warm Moby, babe could end up being too warm & thus uncomfortable.

  • I didn't find out about wraps etc until Ella was about 5 months, so I'm definately in the "never too late" camp!

Having said that, Ella doesn't like to be still when she's wrapped, we have to be walking or moving somehow or she gets fussy, it could be that or he just might not like the position or he might be hot/cold.

Listen to your instincts mama, and follow them.  Your baby will not become "spoiled" or "rotten", he will just know that he is loved!

Thanks!  I have been using a "hug" hold but i was just on the moby website and think that he may like the "hip hug" hold better b/c he is very curious and wants to see everything.  I will also try bouncing on an exercise ball.  Great idea!  Thanks for the support.

  • Before I read your post I thought you were going to say, "my kid is a year and we just got into BWing."  Lol.

I definitely think 3 months is a great time to start. Start with shorter periods of time and work up to longer. Also try different holds, as PP said.

    Good luck!

  • Late to the advice... but I find if I play music while wrapping and wearing I naturally move more. That seems to keep J happy. And as an added bonus he now has favorite music that I can put on and he calms down when he is freaking out.

I agree with PP... I expected your LO to be 1-2years Big Smile 3 months isn't too late at all!

And... my big thing on J needing snuggles is that we have two choices... I can teach him that when he cries I will respond and figure out what he needs, or that I will not respond when he cries. Guess which one I picked... Smile My baby, my choices!

  • We just started with a 10 month old because we became guardians unexpectedly. She was not used to being held allot or shown much attention at all so at first she fussed but now after 2 months she loves it and seems to feel so safe and secure. And it has helped immensely with her emotional development. So no. not too late :-)
