BFers who've weaned (TMI nipple ?)

Sorry if this is a super-weird question, but did your nipples change at all after weaning? I ask b/c I started out with flat nipples and in LO's first 3 weeks he literally changed my anatomy...I had cracked and bleeding nipples for the longest time and now they pretty much stick out all the time from being pulled out so much and building up scar tissue. I'm trying to figure out if they'll go back to being flat and I"ll have to go through all that pain again when I have another LO, or if they're this way for good (which would be weird but probably easier for future babies). Thanks!

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • I did not BF, but I EP'd and my anatomy is forever changed.  With baby #2 there was no starting from square one - the girls were out and they knew what to do.  I can only imagine that it is similar for BF-ing moms, too.
  • Mine didn't change a whole lot between babies. I think the headlights are pretty much permanently on now. :P

FWIW, DD1 tore up my nips, too, but I only had about two weeks of minor soreness with DD2 -- it was a lot easier, in terms of pain at least, the second time around.

  • I had flat nipples before LO, I BF for 18 months and mine have almost gone back to normal, before BFing nipples :(

  • Ah, thanks ladies for giving me an idea of what may be ahead. I had so much soreness when DS was born, I'm already like "oh no!" thinking about if I had to go through that again! BFing has been soooo worth it but it wasn't easy getting started and I am kind of sad sometimes because I feel like my girls got messed up. Not planning to wean until he's at least 12 mo but I didn't know what to expect after that.

  • Sounds like you had inverted nipples and bfing fixed that. They will likely stay "out" now.
