Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Is your baby still scratching him/herself?

I left C's arms unswaddled after I put him back down early this morning, and he did well, but I found a new scratch on his forehead when I picked him up. I keep his nails trimmed pretty close, but he still scratches. Does your LO still do this? I'm thinking we may just have to use socks on his hands or keep swaddling for a while longer.

  • Yes, she actually did about an hour ago and it made me angry. I can trim her nails same day and she manages to scratch herself somehow. And I trim short enough to make most people cringe.

  • Yep.  He got the inside of his ear pretty good last night, and occasionally gets little scratches on his nose.  I'm not going to worry about it, though.  They're little scratches and they heal really fast.  Plus he'd pull off mittens and if I tried swaddling again it would be WWIII here.

  • At least once or twice a week.  He got himself good this afternoon. Oh well.

No mittens here, I think they'd piss him off.

  • OMG, yes!! He manages to scratch the piss out of himself the same night I clip his nails. I am beginning to believe he thinks he looks tough will all these random marks on his face.

  • If it makes you feel better, my 17 month old still scratches herself.

  • I was getting on the ask the SAME thing! Liam is managing to scratch his face, ears AND the top of his head:( He has 2 places on his head that make me cringe right now. I'm cutting his nails every other day and filing down the edges yet it isn't helping.

  • Yes, we still get plenty of scratches and DS is almost 5 months.  I file and check the edges, but he still somehow ends up with pointy pointers.

We cannot keep A's nails short enough.  I trim them every other day, and I make them so short there's nothing left, but she still manages to scratch herself.  Her eczema makes her itch, too, so it's even worse.  We tried mittens/socks, but they just frustrated her and she would get cranky trying to get them off.  We just treat the scratches with a little Auqaphor and go about our business.  They heal quickly, but every now and then she looks like she lost a fight with a rake.  I asked the pedi, and he said it was totally normal.

This is what it's like at our house. We use those mittens as long as possible, and when they get soggy or ripped off we replace them.
