January 2012 Moms

When was your first u/s?

I've scheduled my first 2 appts with my doctor and their telling me I won't have an u/s at either one of them!  The first one is for June 1st and the second one is June 10th.  I'll be 8 weeks for the first one and almost 10 for the second one!  I'm just frustrated because I want to make sure everything is ok!  How can I get them to give me an u/s?  I'm just so worried, this is my first pregnancy and I want to make sure everything is ok.

Re: When was your first u/s?

  • I know a lot of ob's that won't do one at all until 18-20 weeks if you have no risk factors.  I had one yesterday at 6 weeks but that's only because I am seeing an RE.  You should be able to hear the hb via doppler at your 10-week appt.  I know its hard to wait, but have faith everything will be fine and try not to stress needlessly.  Congrats!

  • My 1st appt (6/2) they said they will be doing a transvaginal u/s which will be about 8w5d.

I had my first at 5 weeks but that was because I was having some shooting pains and the doctor was nervous about it being ectopic pregnancy. My doctor's office usually does the first ultrasound at 8 weeks. My is this Thursday which will be 8 weeks off my LMP but 7 weeks off from when I O'd.

  • This is kind of my point though.  Everyone seems to be having one between 8-10 weeks.  I'll be past that after my second one, with no u/s.  You have to understand how nervous I am that's why I'm freaking out a little.  If my dr isn't accommodating me now, how am I to know they will accommodate me later in my pregnancy and labor?

  • Don't freak out.  Its completely normal.  My friend's OB does not do ultrasounds before 20 weeks.  They listened to the heartbeat on the doppler in the office.  You might have that opportunity to make sure everything is ok.  Good luck!

  • Mine sounds the same as yours....I had my first prenatal history appt yesterday and then first dr. appt (where they'll listen for the heartbeat) at 11 weeks.  Then they said they normally do an ultrasound at 20 weeks.

I completely understand wanting one early.  I had more than one mature follicle when I did the HCG trigger, so I'd really like to know if there's more than one in there.  Hopefully my dr. will see that as enough reason to do one at the 11 week appt.

  • I lot of OBs won't schedule an u/s until 12 or 20 weeks, depending on their practice and your history.  If your OB is a 20 week person, you may want to ask if you should get an NT scan.  This is an u/s that evaluates your risk for Down's and similar defects (it does not diagnose, just provides a risk assessment).  It is a longer u/s and would be considerably earlier than a 20 week u/s.  If you opt to go that route, make sure your insurance covers it.

I am having my first u/s at 6w5d with this pregnancy.  That is because of my history of loss and because I am working with an RE.  I had an u/s at 5w2d with my first pregnancy, and that was due to spotting.

  • I have my first appointment tomorrow and I've asked them to do one then. I'm still waiting to hear back but given my history, I guessing they will agree. All OBs are different like PPs said and it also depends on your history. I know if this was my first pregnancy I wouldn't get and u/s till 8-10 weeks

  • I had my first u/s last week at 5 weeks due to some spotting and cramping I was having. I have another scheduled for next week, when I'll be 7 weeks exactly, to follow up from that. My first was supposed to be at my 8 week appointment on 6/2 - I'm not sure if they'll still do one then or not since I'll have just had one the week before.

Since I decided to forgo genetic screening my OB said my first us won't be until 18 weeks unless there is some reason that they feel it would need to be done earlier. Its really hard to wait!

  • I'm in this boat too!

trying to focus on how it really is a good thing to not be eligible for an u/s yet. cause some heartache to have to wait what feels like forever but no where near what I imagine the struggle many go through to conceive and carry a baby to full term now a days.

  • Mine is on Friday... 7 weeks, 4 days for me. But I'm also seeing an RE. My friend was told by her GP that she wouldn't need to even come in until her 3rd month when she first called to say she was pregnant. They asked if she took two pregnancy tests and told her to that was good enough.

  • My 1st u/s in next week @ 6 wks 3 days. Then I'll have another a week later. That's also cuz I had an IUI & it's the policy of the fertility center before they "graduate" you. I can't wait to find out if it's 1 or multiples. I was on Clomid, Gonal F & had 3 large follicles, over 20mm each, before the trigger shot so it's possible. Just want to know either way!

  • At my old Ob office and new their policy is for a first pregnancy w/ no complications, no u/s until 12 weeks. That said I've had a m/c and an ectopic loss so I will be having an early u/s around 6 weeks unless the spotting continues. I know its hard to wait, but it will be so worth the wait to see your baby when its absolutely sure you'll see a hb and whatnot. I don't think your doctor is being disagreeable, its probably just the general policy. Which I don't necessarily agree with, but I'm sure they have their reasons. It'd be fair to ask at your next appt why they don't do one until later.

  • i know that has to be frustrating, im so sorry! Ive heard of drs waiting until women are 20 weeks, that just seems crazy! I had mine at 5w5d, i hope you dont have to wait much longer!!! good luck

Thanks, you've actually calmed me down a bit.  I'm just confused as to why with first time pregnancies they don't do one in the first couple appts.  I'll def be asking why they are waiting.  Thanks again!

Mine will be at 6w1d but that is due to my previous loss.  In all honesty, you don't really see anything at the early ones anyway.

  • My first u/s was yesterday, at 5w4d. I have another one next Monday and one the week after. The only reason for the early u/s is that I'm seeing an RE and have had two early losses. After the third u/s we'll probably graduate to a new OB, so I don't know yet what will happen after that.

my first is next Tuesday (6w6d) for dating purposes. 8 weeks isn't very late though. I understand the frustration, but many women don't get an u/s until their anatomy scan (20ish weeks)

  • My first Dr. appt isn't until week 10, but I may move that to week 13. My first u/s won't be until between 18 and 20 weeks.
  • With my first one I did not get an u/s until the end of the first tri, NT scan.

With this one I switched practices and am going next week at 7w4d.  IF you don't like their policy, switch doctors.
