possibly TMI Question...

are any of you planning to get or give yourself an enema before child birth? I am embarrassed to ask the hospital/nurse if they offer this...I kinda want to do one at home or in the hospital once I start going into labor. I know that its really no big deal, but I would love to avoid pooping while giving birth.  Am I being irrational?

Re: possibly TMI Question...

  • I'm incredibly modest about bodily functions, but I'm still going with a big fat no.  My mom had me and my brother back in the day when they gave enemas and she said that was the worst part of the whole labor and delivery.  She said an enema is the last thing you want when you're in pain from contractions.  More power to ya if you do it though!

  • Most people's bodies will sort of, ahem, empty out prior to labor or in early labor, so no need for an enema.

My mom and MIL said this exactly.

I'm hoping for this to happen

  • I've pretty much accepted the fact that I will poop during delivery.  Not a whole lot you can do about it.  I've even warned my husband that it's going to happen haha.  You just have to laugh about it and not stress.  They see all sorts of things, poop is most likely the last thing the doctors and nurses care about.  Just poop and get over it :)

  • My mom said that she had an enema with my brother and still pooped during delivery.  You could give yourself an enema, but you don't know how quickly your labor will progress and may just encourage even more pooping!

  • When you go into labor, the LAST thing you will be wanting is an enema, I guarantee. Labor and everything that comes with it is completely natural process. Let your body do what it wants to do.

  • I was in the hospital for two weeks after surgery and had to have an enema because the stupid pain medications stopped me up... speaking from personal experience I would say that is the last thing you want. It is very uncomfortable and gives you horrible cramps. I cannot imagine what that might feel like in addition to labor :(

  • I should also add that I had to go to L&D on Saturday for extreme back pain.  The words, "head over to labor and delivery," are enough to cure constipation.

  • MFA: your wording cracked me up. Hope everythings okay now. OP: I had a scheduled induction so the the night before I went in, I gave myself an enema. It wasn't that bad. I will probably do it again. If I was in the process of laboring, then I wouldn't mess with it.

  • I gotta be honest, not thinking the pooping thing is that big of a deal...becasue EVERYONE does it.  You won't be the first...or the last.  And your doctors and nurses won't care.
