Anyone here temp or contract with their job?

What are you doing for Maternity Leave? I am temp and my job will be held but I get no pay for ML. We have been saving up but I am still freaking out!

Re: Anyone here temp or contract with their job?

  • I am a consultant and a contractual worker.  They are allowing me "leave" for 90 days.  I'm in the same boat as you, if I don't work I don't get paid.  I've been saving $$ since I got the BFP, and money will be tight until I start getting paid again (I'm the "breadwinner"), but it'll all work out.  I also just put my student loans into forbearance for 6 months so I don't have to worry about shelling out over $1000/mo for that.  The interest rates are so low for my SL's so it seemed like the best option for us.

I'm a self-employed consultant and do a lot of assignment-based work in-house for clients (staffed on a 3mos assignment right now working right up until my EDD). I do manage a few small clients from home on a monthly basis, so I'm hoping I can maintain that while I'm on ML.

I'm planning to take the rest of 2011 off, and return to an assignment (fingers crossed) in Jan 2012. I've been planning and saving in the hopes that it keeps us flush through the new year but it's definitely a little stressful ... esp. with DD starting pre-school in the fall and keeping our f/t live-in au pair as well. Fingers crossed!

  • I was a temp when I was preggo with DS and I didn't get paid for ML.  We got by just fine.  Things were tight, but we made it through.  I cooked all the meals instead of ordering out and bought mostly sale or coupon items.  I switched to store brand instead of name brand.  Don't stress yourself over it.  Do what you can now to prepare and it will all work out in the long run.

  • I'm an adjunct professor, and while I'm not getting paid maternity leave, I am on "leave."  I can't work the fall semester because LO comes at an awkward time during the summer, which would only give me about 5 weeks off.  Anyway, as long as enrollment would provide me with classes, I'll be back in the spring semester.  I'm so nervous about money and stuff too though, and every suggestion to save seems to be something I do already!  I'm sure we will all be fine.  :)
