Has anyone had (or know someone who's had) a breast reduction?

My breasts are out of control and are really impacting both my physical comfort and self image.  I'm seriously considering a breast reduction in about a year (after I'm done BFing and I've given them time to shrink if they're going to do so).  I have a few questions, though:

1.  How painful is it?  I'll have a 6, 5, and 2 year old when I'm thinking of having it done and want to make sure I can care for them.

2. What happens to breast size if I gain weight after the reduction?  I assume they'll get larger as well, right?

TIA for any answers/advice!

Re: Has anyone had (or know someone who's had) a breast reduction?

  • A friend of mine did about 10 years ago.  She was so happy with the results, she was really tiny, so it was very hard for her to "carry" that weight around.  It was definitely for medical reasons as much as cosmetic.

I don't remember all the details, but I do know it was painful, but not unbearable.  She had to keep them compressed, like flattened with gauze wrapped around her for a bit.  I am seeing her this weekend and will try to ask her more details, since it was so long ago.  But I do know she is glad she did it.

She has had a baby since, just last year, and gaining weight didn't really add much to them.

  • I had one 10 years ago. I don't think the pain was out of control, but you'll probably (obviously) have some difficulty picking your kids up. I was just taking tylenol after mine instead of painkillers and it wasn't bad at all.

I have gained weight and my size did go up a little, from a full C to a D, but I know if I lose it, they'll go back down again.

  • My cousin had one done last summer. The first 2 weeks she was to do absolutely nothing and 4 weeks of very limited activity. So you definitely gonna need to get help with the kids. She was in OT of pain the first few weeks.

  • I've had three friends get them done -- one of them just a month ago.

First one: tiny frame, HUUUUGE boobies, don't know about her pain level. She stayed tiny through the years of kids, her boobs look great. Long time ago. Breastfed both her kids after the reduction.

Second one (college roomie): large frame and the biggest boobs I have ever seen. She is so happy with her reduction, but she did have a lot of drainage issues and pain. She has gained a bit of weight but her breasts look the same to me and she's never mentioned them growing. In her situation, I think she almost went too small, but she has never complained. Did not breastfeed.

Third one (neighbor and friend who did it recently): Pain was as expected and percs were her friend, especially the first few days. No infection or drainage problems. She could not pick up the kids, etc. She was suprised at the emotional process --- it was difficult for her to accept her new nipples. But she is super happy with them. What's interesting is that the 'footprint' of her breasts is still big -- just the volume is done. Maybe that will change through time?

  • I had one 5 years ago and it was not painful. I had a really good recovery and was sitting at the table eating dinner with my family the night of my surgery. I was not able to lift anything over 10 lbs for 6 weeks, so you would not be able to lift your 2 old for that long. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself.
