Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Has anyones LO been put on Albuterol.......

and if so how did he/she react and did it help?

My little man has a chest cold and the Dr. prescribed Albuterol but also said that in children this small it often doesnt work and to use only as needed.

Just wondering if anyone else has used this, did you notice any side effects?

Jack got Albuterol everyday for the first 3 months of his life. Now he has an inhaler we use as needed. The only side effect I noticed is an increased heartrate and it sometimes makes him a little hyper.

  • I wouldn't use it for just a chest cold...it might work but it's really a steroid used for asthma...it will most likely hype him up-my three year old sometimes need albuteral for his asthma-it hypes him up for sure!

Steamy shower room helps to loosen the crud that's in LO's chest.

  • DS had RSV and needed the treatments for over a week, maybe longer(I can't remember now). I didn't notice any side effects.  Steamy showers are a must(we have a tiny bathroom, and he was in there every single time we showered(in his bouncy seat).

It's not just for asthma. It helps with weezing as well.

  • Our DD was prescribed it for her cough she has had for two months which has settled in her chest. She wheezes and kind of gugles when she coughs. We only use it when she is wheezing. It has quieted the cough but really amps her up so we try to do it several hours before bed if she needs it. Otherwise getting her to sleep is nearly impossible.

  • We used it back in January when E was wheezing from a cold  It gave her the shakes.  We switched to xopenex, which is expensive, but the pharmacutical company has a discount card (make sure you get it from the doc).  The discount card gives you 12 free refills.  You have to specifically ask for xopenex.  The docs don't like to perscribe it for some reason.

It actually has a few uses other than asthma. My 8 yr old nephew takes it in pill form as a treatment for a muscle deficiency in his legs. If my doctor prescribed it for a certain use, I would use it.

This for us as well with the wheezing and horrible cough. We only use as needed for the wheezing. We just got it on Thur night for the first time and have a nebulizer for home treatments. It will elevate the heart rate and make baby a little hyper.

We were perscribed it also. It did work but when her cold wasnt clearing up and she still needed it the pedi switch is to a steroid for children once a night for a month. and then to use the other only if needed. She can take both an d then go to sleep because it makes her relax.
